Pete Catania Shuts Out Atlantic Grid Sessions Open Thursday Football practice will begin f Thursday at all three football playing schools in the county, Beaufort, Morehead City, and Queen Street. Coach Norman Clafk of Morehead City got back to town Friday after spending part of the summer in California and says that he will run practice sessions from 6 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. daily. He said that the school was hav ing to change insurance companies and that all the boys would be fully covered befbre practice ses sions begin. The company that cov ered the team last year does not write such a policy this year. Clark also joked that he was in the market for art assistant coach. David Lee, his assistartt last year, has moved to Beaufort, where he wilfi work with Hugh Gordon. S. H. BarroW, coach at QUeen Street in Beaufort, says that he will also begin practicing Thurs day. The Knights had one of the top teams in the conference last year and Coach Barrow says that he hopes to have another good team this season. Injures Back I. K. Rochelle, Mitchell Village, was taken to the Morehead City Hospital Sunday by the Dill ambu lance. His back was X-raved and then Mr. Rochelle was returned to his home by ambulance. He was injured when a porch on a cottage at the beach collapsed Saturday night while a number of people were standing on it. The long hdurs of Work and worry have paid off marty times this week, and will continue to pay off for years to come. Charlie and the public-spirited people who worked with him have put Morrhead City in the minds of thousands who never knew such a place existed. In our corner of town, we were proud of the good turnout from the yacht basin in the water pa rade, especially of the Canadian visitors whose boat lies alongside ours. Mr. and Mrs. Leduc from Montreal decorated their hoase boat Isabelle and joined the pa rade. The Leducs are Florida bound but in no hurry?Christmas in Florida, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, then on up the Mississippi. Back to fishing ? sheepshead fishermen from Mom and Pop's and Ryggs Cstafp hide mSMe excellent catches of big sheeps head. Blars St night ate the prised fish from Fleming's,' and croaker and trout fishing are' improving. M B. J. White's, anglers were reporting outstand ing catches of gray trout and a fair number of flounder near Number 17 buoy. Surf fishermen are getting floyn der on Atlantic Beach, and Mm. Holt at the Bridgeview reports good fishing in her "trout spot" behind the motel. Mixed bottom fishing, with a few speckled trout has been the report from Bunch's. Ocean pier fishing is very good: at the Triple-Ess, Billy Winsted of Wilson caught 4tt blues. Plenty of small gray trout, big catches of spots, all on fire ball, have been reported. At Sportsman Pier, Patsy Finch and Lee Schlingman caught 45 to 50 blues. The Carolina Queen Sunday had one of the season's best catches of red snappers, average weight 3 pounds; several big groupers were reported. From the Danco, the Sunday jackpot went for a 40 pound amberjack; red snappers and sea bass were abundant. Fair-to-good catches of dolphin, ambeijack* albacore and kings were reported along the water front, by the Dolphin fleet, by A. M. Willis, Lois Nancy, Blue Water, Bunny, Harriet L, al though ofsfhore fishing activity was slot. Inshore fishermen had some good catches of blues and mackerel. Smyrna-Harkcrs Island climbed nto third place in county baseball oaguc standings Sunday afternoon ?vith a pair of victories over the "oast Guard at Newport. The visit ing team took a 6-4 verdict in the first game and a 13-5 decision in the second. Laurie Willis limited the Coast Guard to nine hits in the first game, giving up three of the nine tPNfHc Culpepper. Charles" Brax ton, Coast Guard hurler got two for four and scored a run. Leading Ratter Snoball Gaskill was the leading batter for Smyrna-HI with two for three. The winners jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and stretched it to 4-0 in the top of the second. The Coast Guard came lack in the bottom of the fourth to score a single run, but Smyrna Ill broke loose for two more in he fifth. The Coast Guard rallied ror three runs in the last of the iixth, but was unable to even up he score. Lewis Starts In the second game Jamie Lewis darted for Smyrna-HI and gave ip four runs in the first inning. Jis. teammates staked him to a 1-4 lead in the second inning and le pitched near shutout ball the ?est of the way, allowing one run n the bottom of the sixth. MTRG Takes 1-0 Victory After Losinq Opener 9-5 Tele Catania and Hutch Saunders hooked up In the tighest hurlers' duel of the county baseball I en true season Sunday afternoon. Catania shut out Atlantic for eight in nings before his MTRG teammates were able to get to Saunders for a run in the bottom of the eighth. The extra inning 1-0 decision followed a 9-5 victory by Atlantic. Thomas Salter started the first game for Atlantic and was greeted ny iwo qiucK uuunies. He walked the third man to face him and gave way to Saunders, who went the rest of the way. Salter had pitched Atlantic to a 12-2 victory over the Bears at New Bern the night before. Dean Crewse was the starting and losing pitcher for the Marine team. The second game featured fine pitching and tight fielding by both teams. Saunders, who had allowed five runs in the first game, seemed to get warmed up right in the sec ond game and sailed through seven innings before giving up a double and a single to successive batters. Catania, who won the game, al lowed only three hits to Atlantic batters and was never in serious trouble. He got good support in the field and became the second pitch er in the league to hold a victory over Atlantic. The Coast Guard's Charles Brax ton pitched a two-hitter at New port last month for a 3-1 decision. Salter Path will visit Atlantic in the final doubleheader of the sea son next Sunday. MTRG will travel to Smyrna-HI for a twin bill and the Coast Guard will be idle. Blues, Clippers Play to 5-5 Tie By ALBERT MILLS The Morehead City Blues and Piney Green Clippers from Camp Lejeune played to a 5-5 tie at the Wade Brothers ball park Sunday afternoon. The game was called due to darkness in the 12th inning. The Blues had the game until the top of the eighth inning when Buster Tootle pitched a fast hall to Clipper third baseman Shepherd. Shepherd lined the pitch over the right field wall to tie up the game and that was the last run scored by either team. Tootle, who had hit a hoihcr in th* fifth inhing. had a 5 1 lead go ing into the sixth. The Clippers got to him for a single run in the sixth and two in the seventh. In the ninth inning the Clippers got two men on the base paths with one out. Blues manager Roy Stiles fulled Tootle and put in Lefty Hen ry Who got the side out without allowing a run to score. Henry was still pitching when the game was called in the 12th inning. The Blues will play host to the Kinston All Stars Sunday after noon at the Wade Brothers park. Sluggers Tom Jones and Skin Jones are in quite a batting slump, but they are working hard to try to shake it off before Sunday's game. Whip Collins or Lefty Henry will start the game for the Blues. and four singles, led the Smyrna HI attack. King Thomas hod three for four and Jamie Lewis collected three for five.
