The Messiah (Coat in tied from Page 1, Section 2) FouiMjUng Hospital contributed funds for a chapel, Handel prompt ly donated a splendid organ and offered to dedicate it with a ape cial performance Of Ills "Sacred Oratorio". Repetition Sought The chapel of the fashionable charity was crowded to capacity. There # in the solemnity of the chapel the music made so profound an impression that Handel was begged tp repeat it. Scorned for years, The Messiah suddenly became I*ondon's best loved oratorio?and the composer's most profitable work. The Church endorsed it, and eventually it was performed in Westminster Abbey with full or chestra and a choir of 500 voices. At one of the performances in the presence of King George II, the King was so inspired that when the chorus began to sing the "Hal lelujah Chorus", he rose to his feet in adulation. The audience stood with him and since then it has been the custom for people to stand during the sing ing of the "Hallelujah Chorus". To Haudel it seemed especially fitting that the music he had writ ten to glorify the birth of a Babe in a manger should be consecrated to the welfare of homeless and un wanted infants. At least once a year, as long as he lived, he con ducted The Messiah for the Found ling Hospital. From these coneerts, he contributed more than $35,000. For many years after Handel's death The Messiah was the favo rite composition for charities of all kinds. As one writer of the times reported, "It fostered the orphan, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and relieved suffering more than any single musical produc tion m any country in the world." With the success of The Mes siah, Handel's star rose again. All his neglected compositions were brought out and the adopted gen ius was rediscovered by London. Goes Blind But Handel was old and broken in health. His eyesight was fail ing. While writing Jeptha (the ora torio containing a chorus signifi cantly titled "How Dark, O Lord, Are Thy Ways"), Handel went blind. Despite the loss of his sight and his feeble health, Handel continued to compose and conduct. The aging genius was led to the organ at Covent Garden, and there he di- . rected The Messiah for the last time. Once again the immortal music proclaimed: For unto us a Child is born, onto us a son is given; and the govern ment shall be upon his shoulders; and his name shall be called Won derful, Counselor, the Almighty Ood, the Prince of Peace. Scneduled to play at the Morehead Theatre Sunday through Tuesday is My Gun is Quick, a Mickey Spillane chiller. Gunsight Ridge, a western, will play the same days at the City Theatre. The secret formula for My Gun is Quick is 5x39-18-33. To get as scientific as one can get in the presence of five beautiful dolls, the formula explains itself thus: 5 is the number of luscious ladies who swiggle, wiggle or jiggle through the mystery melodrama tics that make up the tension packed action of this newest Spil lane story. 39-18-33. give or take an inch or fraction thereof, are the measurements of bust-waist-hip, respectively. Gunsight Ridge is an adult west ern story of a man turned outlaw by a strange quirk of fate. Excit ing yet always believable realism marks this production. There is not a single process or faked shot in the entire picture, even hazar dous runaway stagecoach sequen ces were filmed as both camera car and coach careened around haii-pin turns high in the Arizona mountains, all caught by Ernst Laszlo's brilliant photography. June Allyson and David Niven share top hilling in My Man God frey slated for Wednesday through Saturday at the Morehead. God frey, be it known, is s handsome gentleman of fine breeding who takes a job as butler for the wack iest family in New York Society circles. Niven, as the butler, is devas tating as he endures the family's way of life, slowly teaching them the foolishness of their manners. June Allyson, the lovesick daugh ter. displays a brilliant aptitude for comedy that stamps My Man Godfrey as the finest performance she has ever given on the screen. Rock Hudson and Dorothy Ma lone co-star in The Tarnished An gels, scheduled for Wednesday through Satnrday at the City Theatre. The story revolves around a ro mance between Hudson, a news paper reporter, and Miss Malone, parachutist in a barnstorming air circus. Motorist Attempts to Eat His Suspended License San Diego, Calif. (AP) ?When Police Officer Leonard Baber stopped Raymond T. Camoras, 23, for a minor traffic violation he found him trying to eat bis driver's license. "Why?" asked Baber.
