New, Heavy Rails Will Be
Flush with Highway Soon
New roils being laid from New
port to the Morehead City port
will be made flush with the high
way, Southern Railway operations
officials said this week.
The heavier rails, when first
lai(J, extend several inches above
the surface of the highway at rail
road crossings and give vehicles
quile a jolt.
Planking and macadam will bo
laid adjacent to the rails to make
the crossir i smooth. Motorists
are asked to bear with the railway
company until the work is com
pleted.

Jerry Lewis Brings Famed
Sad Sack to Life on Film
The Sad Sack, world-famed car
toon character, has been brought
to life. Jerry Lewis reaches his
all-time peak of hilarity as the
Sad Sack, George Baker's hapless,
misfit GI. The movie of the same
name will play Sunday through
Wednesday at the City Theatre.
So completely is he the fumbling j
private with the pathetic desire to
do right and the uncanny talentj
for doing wrong, you might think
the character was invented ex
pressly for him.
As Sad Sack, Jerry wreaks havoc
against friend and foe on two con
tinents and a host of able comics

forging ahead, the other fighting

features in Saturday's program at
the City.
Two Classes Scheduled
In Aluminum Etching
Persons interested in the craft
of etching aluminum may attend
two instruction classes Wednesday
and Thursday. Jan 29 and 30, at
the home agent's office, courthouse
annex. Beaufort.
Each session will start at 2 p.m.
Two classes are necessary because
work done at the afternoon ses
sion cannot be completed until the
next day.
Persons who can't get to the
Wednesday afternoon class are in
vited to the Thursday class any
way. The instructor will be Mrs.
Floy Garner, home agent.
Much of Palm Springs, Calif., is
built on an Indian reservation. So
the Sehuilla Indians are getting
rich by lease lending to the Palm
Springs tenants.

chute rigger in Marine Attack

Corps Air Station here.
But Lt. Col. C. M. Kunz, Com
manding Officer of Marine Attack
Squadron 533, who ejected from his
F9F "Cougar" jet aircraft last
week and made his descent safely
in a parachute packed by Corporal
Allen, wanted to do more than just
shake his hand.
Aud this week the colonel did
more than that, he meritoriously
promoted Allen to his present rank
because this was the second time
in as many months' that one of
Allan's packed parachutes had
saved the life of a Marine jet pilot.
