Chamber Manager Releases Progress, Financial Report Reading Class Tours Newspaper Plant Tuesday Members of the sixth grade read ing class at Beaufort School, Mrs. Ben Arrington. teacher, and grade mothers visited THE NEWS TIMES Tuesday morning. Prior to a tour of the plant, the class discussed with the editor the value of reading. After a tour of the editorial of fices and the printing plant, the children were given a line of type bearing their name, and a news paper. Taylor Mrs. Charles Ferrier Four to Attend Welfare Session Miss Georgie Hughes of the coun ty welfare department announces that she will attend the annual North Carolina Public Welfare In stitutc to be held in Raleigh Nov. 12-14. Going with Miss Hughes will be Mrs. C. G. Holland, chairman of the county welfare board, Mis. Elizabeth Easterling, a case work er, and one other staff member. Dr. Ellen Winston, commission er of the State Board of Public Welfare which sponsors the meet ing, states that many organiza tions interested in programs re lated to public welfare are expect ed to be represented among the 500 ? J. A. DulMsr, Morehead City Chamber of Commerce Manager, has released a progress report for the first 11 months uf 1958. The report includes a financial state ment. The chamber budget for 1958 was $10,465. Of that smount, $9, 383.90 has been collected and $8, 759.84 spent. The chamber has a current balance of $624.06. Salaries to the chamber man ager and his secretary accounted for $5,014.99. Advertising via pic torial brochures, maps, printing, magazines and newspapers cost $1,102.68 during the first 10 months of the year. Office expense to date has been $775.73. Postage was figured at $504.26. Various industrial develop ment projects cost the chamber $588.55. Travel expense to meetings, hearings and conventions was $292.03. Telephone and telegraph bills were $192.30. The cost of maintaining membership, through collection costs, meetings and bul letins, was set at $164.30. An old bill of $100 was paid and $25 of petty cash was spent dur ing the first 10 months of the year. Mr. DuBois listed the acheive ments of the various chamber cominittccs. They follow: Industrial development commit tee, W. B. Chalk chairman? This committee encouraged the expan sion of local businesses, invited the Cooperative Savings and Loan Association, compiled and pub lished an industrial survey of the county and cooperated with the state and Southern Railway in seeking new industries. Advertising and publicity, Dick Parker chairman? This committee has published a pictorial brochure on the county, furnished photos and editorial matter to papers, magazines, radio and tv, promoted more traffic on US 70 and an swered over 8,000 inquiries with complete information on business, recreation, scenic and historic as sets of the community. Transportation committee, P. II. Gccr Jr. chairman? This commit tee has promoted a four-lane high way from Havelock to the port, worked for a new bridge across the Newport River to allow for port expansion, promoted an in dependent state waterways com mission, pushed construction of a new bridge across North River and worked for completion of the All-Seashore Highway. Tourists and conventions com mittee, J. Morton Davis chairman ?This committee helped invite more conventions to the Morehead persons attending from over the state. All 100 county departments of public welfare will be repre sented. Among speakers who will ap pear on the two day institute pro gram are Judge G u s t a v L Schramm of the juvenile court of Alleghany County, Pittsburgh. Pa.; Thomas J. Waxter, director, Mary land State Department of Public Welfare. Anne Wilkens, professor, Uni versity of Texas Graduate School of Social Work; and Rcba Choate, Washington, D. C., principal wel fare specialist, Bureau of Public Assistance, US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. City ten than have ever been held here before. The past sum mer was also a record tourist sea Civic affairs and public relations committee, Rufus Butner chair man ? This committee promoted the formation of the county plan ning commission, urged landscap ing and completion of the town park, improved mosquito control measures and worked with town and county school officials to Im prove schools. Merchants committee, George Whittle chairman? This committee has taken over the Christmas lighting program. New and more impressive fixtures have been or dered for this year. Military affairs committee, Frank Cassiano chairman ? This committee has brought closer co operation with our Marine Corps neighbors at Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune.
