He touched on the county's grow ing taxable wealth, especially on Atlantic Bench, at which point commissioner Skinner Chalk stated that not only was another Bogue Sound bridge badly needed, but would probably pay for itself in two years by indirectly increasing the value of taxable real estate R. M. Williams, county farm agent, stated that this year at least 80 per cent of all cattle in the county must be tested for traces of tuberculosis and that Mil ten J. Tillery, state department of agriculture veterinarian, needed a helper. Mr. Williams- request for funds were granted to the extent Ot 5180. Mr. Williams was the first to pre sent his department's budget which was accepted tentatively. E. O. Moore's 1958 and prior years' tax collections for April were commended by the commis sioners. The 1958 levy collections in April alone were $22,506.08. Ad ded to this were collections of $947.73 for prior years accounted for by Mr. Moore's deputy, E. L. Brinson. To date 89 28 per cent of the 1958 levy has been collected. Mrs. W. I.. Woodard and Mrs. J. O. Barbour Jr., re pro senium the county library, requested $690.00 to re-roof the library build ing at Pollock and Broad Streets. Beaufort. The commissioners took that matter under advisement, John Humphrey, atate^Mghway department district engineer, was present to assist the commissioners in various requests for road pav ing, and drainage problems. The board will request the high way department to pave a one mile read from highway 70 near Beaufort to Jones Village and then back to highway 70. A 16-year-old Kinston girl, Dells Jean Paramore, received severe leg bruises Saturday night when a ear in which she was sitting was struck by a IBM Chevrolet, being operated by Preston Delma Eve rett*, also af Kinston. The accident occurred at 11:3* p.m. Saturday seven miles east af Atlantic Beach on the Salter Path Road. The car in which the Paramore girl was riding had skidded off the road going waat, and was trying to gat back on when cars traveling aaat, driven by Alan Michael Traub and Robert Sabiston of Kin ston, stopped to help. Traub and Sabiston both pulled their vehicks into the wrong lane facing oncom ing traffic to offer help. Everett, traveling west, was forced into the ditch by the cars parked on the highway and struck tha car in which Miss Paramore waa sitting. Williams, county farm agent, announces that farmers can see a grass and weed control dem onstration in a corn field on Ralph Wilkins' farm, east of Beaufort. The farm agent says "very effec tive results" have been obtained with a new chemical. The chemical is practically in soluable in water, but following application, it moves into the sur face layer of the soil. As the roots af weeds and grass grow down, they accumulate enough of the chemical to cause death. The farm agent warns farmers to be on the lookout in irish potato fields for the European corn borer moth. The moth lays eggs, then the larvae feed on Uie leaves and stems of the potato plant..
