Good Sweet Potato Crop
Begins with Good Seed
Bayer* are preflkOag that if
farmers arc to expert a reason
able price for their sweet potatoes
this year, tiny must produce a
high-yielding, quality crop.
And the beat way to produce
?tich a crop, says Foil W. Mc
Laughlin, acting director of the NC
Crop Improvement Aasoeiation, is
to start with good seed potatoes.
Use only certified seed if bossi
ble, Mr. McLaughlin said. Bed only
seed H* inches In diameter or
over, and examine each potato for
scurf. w
The Crop Improvement Associa
tion has just completed storage
inspections of certified seed pota
toes for sale. ,
Mr. McLaughlin reports about I
36,000 bushels of Porto Rica and ;
16,000 bushels of Copper Skin Gold
Rush are available. I
Local agricultural agents or the '
Crop Improvement Association will I
furnish farmers with the names \
of ctrtihrd Kcd pfoducin upon
rt"AJ|1( these potatoes have been
found to conform with the high
standard! set for certified Met
potatoes," Mr. McLaughlin added.
"Farmer! should make sure a blue
tag is attacked to each basket."
Some farmers make a practice
of selling their best potatoes and
saving the strings (less than I "2
inches in diameter) for bedding.
Experiments have showo that
plants produced from strings aver
aged yielding Its bushels per acre,
where certified seed (1V4 Inches
and over) averaged 217 bushels
pef acre.
"This increase could mean the
diffetence between a profit and
loss on an acre of sweet potatoes,"
Mr. McLaughlin pointed out.
"Aad where sect potatoes are
found to have scurf," he concluded,
'get some more seed; for trying
to treat diseased potatoes is a
waste of time and money."
