make plans for the coming bazaar.

Students who are already mem
bers of tt.. Beta Club went out
into the audience and tapped stu
dents who had been selected for
membership To be selected, a
student must have an overall grade
average of N or above and must
be recommended by the principal.
Preceding the tapping ceremon
ies. a program waa presented
which consisted of devotions, led
by Andrea McKnight, and abort
talks by several members of the
Beta Club. The topic of the pro
gram was The Importance of a
Good Education. Speakers Included
Kathy Chalk, who rpoke on Net

whose topic was The New Cool
Schools; and Barbara Roush, who
spoke on Beta and Improved
Scholarship.

of the Woman's Society of Christian
Service met at the St. James Meth
odist Church, Newport. Thursday.
There were approximately 120
members and guests present.
The meeting opened with the
singing of Let the Lower Lights Be
Burning. The morning devotional
was given by the Rev. Ralph Flem
ing Jr.. pastor of the church; the
welcome by Mrs. Rena Edwards
and the response and recognition
of guests by Mrs. Eugene Koonce.
Special music was presented by
MfMt. K. Montague.
Mrs. Fred Smith, chairman, pre
sided at the business meeting. It
was voted that in the future the
host church would serve lunch at

On Wednesday, Oft. 14, mem
beri of the Newport School chap
ters of the FFA and the FHA met
at the schoolhouse at 5 o'clock in
the morning to board buses leav
ing for the state fair in Raleigh.
While there they especially enjoy
ed viewing the 4-H club exhibits,
educational exhibits, farm machin
ery and animal exhibits, and the
village of yesteryear.
They were accompanied by Mrs.
Betty Mizelle, FHA sponsor; Mr.
C. S. Long, FFA sponsor; Mrs.
Carol Hohl, and Mrs. Mary Bell
Adams.
They returned Wednesday night
tired, wet, and muddy, but felt the
day had been well spent.

at her bird feeding station in 1957.
Mrs. Cordova lives in Mansfield
Park.
Here phone call came in response
to an editorial Friday requesting

painted bunting, since this area is
reputed to be one of the few places

ny Too, towed into Morehead City%
Sunday night a boat believed to be
the one from which three fisher
men were thrown Wednesday
near Cape Lookout. One of the
fishermen, David Southerland,
Goldsboro, drowned.

Capt. George Bedsworth, in the
Dolphin, stood by the Bunny as she
