'Round About Town
By ALICE II. TAYIAB
The Garden Club meeting, held
last week, displayed some of the
most ardent enthnstasni im this
great avocation to be seen in a
long time. Thougfi I he group waa
not as large as expected, many
helpful suggestions were made con
cerning what bulbs should be plant
ed now, how to prune, when to
prune, and other helpful sugges
tions.
Mrs. Mabel Gilehrist discussed
the tremendous beautification pro
gram that's been undertaken in
Norfolk, which has met with great
success. She also pointed out that
to get ideas on the organization of
a garden club, she had talked with
the Morehead City Club, and the
Swansboro Garden Club, which in
cidentally, is affiliated with the
Woman's Club in Jacksonville.
In Morehead City, the Garden
Club is in the Garden, and Civics
Division of the Woman's Club.
A magazine of great value to
those interested in gardening was
brought by Mrs. Gilchrist for the
group to see. It is the North Caro
lina Gardener, available only
through membership in a garden
club. Mrs. Gilchrist suggested to
the group that our local Garden
Club be sponsored jointly by the
Senior and Junior Woman's Clubs,
with a steering committee com
posed of members from both clubs.
Suggestions as to how Beaufort
could further be beautified with
the upcoming Centennial in mind
were made. Mrs. Julia Copeland
commented on a concentrated drive
to have plenty of flowers in bloom
that would make a good showing.
Since the celebration is planned
for June, she noted that the spec
tacular blooms of hydrangeas, pe
tunias, zinnias, and roses would
make a good showing, and at the
same time be economical to ob
tain and easy to grow. Mr. R. M.
Williams then pointed out that in
connection with this same idea,
the ,mall pines which have died on
Front Street should W replaced im
mediately so as not to break the
continuity and keep a uniform size.
lie also stated that the Soil Test
ing Service program would extend
through this week, due to last
week's bad weather. Just before
we adjourned, plants and rooting*
were exchanged, and yours truly
came home with nine pine seed
lings and eight big strawberry
plants.
Several members of the group,
when asked when to have another
meeting, stated that many mothers
with children in school had ex
pressed a desire for morning meet
ings, so the group decided to meet
again Thursday, N6v. 12, at 10:30
thf Scout Building. ?
We hope all of you who couldn't
make it to the last meeting will
