Additional proof that practically all forest fires occur ring in North Carolina-protected areas in IMA were plan-caused and not due to lightning or other na tural causes was cited today by state forester Fred H. Claridge. Claridge, releasing a report on the number of forest fires and the acreage burned in the 91 of the state's 10* counties cooperating with the Department of Conserva tion aid Development's forestry division in forest fire prevention and suppression said 3.004 of the 1,047 fires occurring in the protect ed areas in 1959 were definitely man-caused. The fires barned *5,1*4 of the some 17,250,000 acres of forest lands under State and county pro tection. No figures are available on the number of fires which occurred in the niae counties that do not par ticipate with the State in forest fire prevention and suppression. These counties are: Currituck, New Hanover, Rockingham, Forsyth, Davie, Lincoln, Union, Person and Mecklenburg. Among them they have more thaa one million acres of foreet lands. Some 31 of the 3,047 fires ac counted for about 80 per cent of the tetal acreage burned in the pro tected areas, Claridge pointed out. Most of the fires occurred in the upper and lower Coastal Plains section of the State. At leaat 396 of the fires were (aid to have been of incendiary origin. A total of 29S persons were convicted of forest law violations. Penalties imposed on them ranged from small fines to a five-year orison sentence. Claridge noted that all but 347 of the 1,047 fires occurred during the first six months of 1959. "The spring season is always the worst time of the year for forest fires in this State," he added. ? Theme of the service this year is Labourers Together with God ll ' = ? Postmaster Mails Many Bees Mayhew, Miss. (AP) ? Business is always bussing for Mrs. Maude Morris, postmaster o I this 225 per son hamlet. She handles the mail ing of more than 60 million bees a year. "I lick thousands of <k>llars worth of stamps annually and stick them on literally millions of bees," Mrs. Morris says with pride. Not exactly on the bees ? but on the containers carrying them. Because the huge Stover Api aries and its bees account for most of the third class postoffice's busi ness, the postoffice department gave Mrs. Morris permission to designate the office "The Bee Post Office, Mayhew, Miss." The bees are mailed in special hives that have two wire ends for free circulation. A hive will weigh about five pounds and contain about 4,000 bees. Feb. 24 ?
