Newport Senior Class
Bids Teachers Farewell
By UNM He DONALD and
mrrcs JAMES
Well, exams are over and school
is out . For some it's a very good
feeling, but some of us hate to
Wave. Especially the seniors.
Next year, the Hawk's Corner
will be continued by Ann Garner
and Jenny Lynn Garner. We hope
that they will have as much en
joyment doing it as we have.
Because this is our last issue,
we would like to show special rec
ognition to our htgh school faculty,
and principal.
Mr. E. B. Comer is our hard
working principal. He holds a mas
ter of arts degree from the Univer
sity of North Carolina and a bach
elor of science degree from Ap
palachian State Teachers college
Besides his position of principal
he teaches typing and geography, j
During his spare time, he canj
usually be found somewhere fish
ing. This year's senior class wish :
es him the best fishing season i
ever.
Mr. Otis L. Adams holds a bach
elor of science degree from East
Carolina college. His job at NHS
is to teach English, French and to
care for the library.
We have word that Mr. Adams j
will not be back at NHS next year. |
We do not know if it is because he
has found himself a June bride or I
just thinks that some of the stu
dents are against him.
It is possible that he has had j
more jokes pulled on him this year |
than any other teacher. We feel
assured that he will never forget
such stunts as the hall coat, lock
ed door, water filled trash can and
the many others.
Good luck in your future mar
riage.
Another great teacher is Mrs.
Dorothy Joyce, who is the junior
class advisor. She has a bachelor
of science degree from WCUNC.
Her job this year was teaching
English and social studies.
Among the many things with
which she is credited is the junior
senior prom, which resulted in a
very enjoyable time for all.
Mr. Charles S. Long is our vo
cational agriculture teacher, FFA
advisor and safety patrol advisor.
Mr. Long has been teaching here
for approximately 35 years with
hardly any absences until this
year, when he became sick and
had to miss the last three months
of school. His place was filled by
Mr. Roger Newby and Mr. II .
Cherry.

June 3? Mr. and Mrs. Elton Wil

Mr. Ix>ng holds a bachelor of
aetoace degree from NC Slate.
It is not very likely that any stu- 1
dent in high school will miss the
pleasure of having Mrs. Margaret
Mann as a teacher. Mrs. Mann is
the senior class advisor and the
only math teacher we have.
Along the last of the year Mrs
Mann can frequently l>e heard
wishing for another math teacher
to help her out next year.
She is a graduate of the Univer
sity of North Carolina and holds
a master of arts degree.
The favorite of all favorites is
Mrs Betty VV. Mizelle.
Mrs. Mizelle hp Ids a bachelor of
science degree from the University
of North Carolina She teaches
home economics and science. She
is one of the most active teachers
in school.
This year she was the freshman
class advisor, home economics
teacher. FHA advisor, biology
teacher, and chemistry teacher.
This year we had something un
usual in high school, a man wife
team. The wife was Mrs. Anne
Schafran and the husband, Mr.
Douglas Schafran
Mrs. Schafran holds a bachelor
of science degree from Kast Caro
lina college This year she taught
civics and English, and was also
a freshman class advisor.
Mr. Schafran holds a bachelor

our basketball and baseball taach.
We have also been informed that
this couple will not be back at

I Dealing with
As of July 1( 1%0, a bereaved
widow or widower in North Caro
lina will no longer have to under
go the sad and depressing experi
ence of learning that he or she
will not inherit a fair share of his
or her departed's estate simply
because there was no will. On
that date North Carolina's new in
heritance law goes into effect.
Approximately 30 people heard
the new law explained by attorney
Luther Hamilton Jr Tuesday night
at the courthouse. The law will
apply only in cases where a per
son has died without leaving a will.
The law is the result of over a
quarter of a century's work by
lawyers and legislators.
Our old and antiquated pre-.fuly
1, I960 inheritance laws were mod
eled after and derived directly
from the old English common law
| and had been changed or modern
ized very little in the past 150
years, Mr. Hamilton said.
If a man dies intestate under
the present law (intestate is a term
meaning that a person has died
without leaving a will), leaving
only personal property and no chil
dren, his widow gets the first
$10,000 in value of the personal
j property. She, or his parents, di
vide the rest.
However, if he dies owning only
real property (land) the Canons
of Descent and the Law of Power
come into play and the wife gets
only a life estate in one-third of
the real property and the brothers
iand sisters would get all the rest,
leaving tin- parents who ratty be
I old and needy, nothing.
I After July 1, 1900 this situation
I will no longer prevail. Surviving
husbands and wives, as well as
other kin, will inherit a "fair
share" of property where there is
no will, Mr. Hamilton said.
Husbands and wives are treated
equally and fairly as are all kin of
equal degree, while many ancient
and obsolete property rules, which
have survived for no good reason,
are abolished or modernized.
Some of the more important
points of the new law are as fol
lows:
I. There is no longer any dis
tinction between real and personal
property for the purpose of deter
mining who can inherit it. Pre
lains New Law
Inheritance
viously, who could inherit proper
ty frequently depended on whether
it was real or personal with dif
ferent classes of heirs entitled to
each. This doubtful distinction has
been abolished so that property of
an intestate (one who dies without
a will) will go to the same sur
vivors, regardless. of the nature of
the property.
2. Husbands and wives may now
inherit equally from each other
and, with the old marital life
estates of dower and courtesy
abolished, receive substantial full
ownership share of the intestate
estate.
3. Certain obsolete doctrines such
as the distinction between ances
tral and non-ancestral property
have been abolished. Half-brothers
and half-sisters and other half
blood kin can now inherit equally
with their equivalent whole-blood
kin.
4. An illegitimate child is given
full right to inherit not only from
but by and through its mother,
cutting the child completely off
from the lineage of the father and
making it a true member of the
family of the mother. Formerly,
it could inherit real propej^y from,
but not by or through, its mother.
5. The law of advancements has
been rewritten in greater detail to
apply to any person who would be
an heir of the deceased, instead of
just children, as previously was
the law.
6. The new law prefers parents
over brothors and sisters in the
order of succession on the basis
of their greater probable aeed.
7. The new law provides a new
and more equitable order of des
cent and distribution.
8. The new law limits the inheri
tance rights of collateral kin to
those within five degrees of kin
ship to the intestate, unless it is
necessary to go further than five
degrees to find kin capable of in
heriting so as to prevent the prop
erty from escheating to the state.
