Club Women Learn Crafts
Jewelry is exciting to wear when you make it yourself. Shown
making copper enameled jewelry at the Home Demonstration handi
craft workshop, Manteo, are Mrs. Ann Bell, assistant home economics
agent in Perquimans county, left; and Mrs. Emanuel Ross, of Wild
wood.
Manteo ? "Choose your craft
wisely and stick with it." That
was the advice Mrs. L. B. Sadler
of Pamlico county gave the Home
Demonstration club women attend
ing the fifth handicraft workshop
held at Mantco 4-H camp recently.
Mrs. Sadler learned to do cop
per enameling at one of the first
workshops held in the district.
Over 150 club women from the
16 eastern counties attended the
workshop. Classes were held in
aluminum chasing and embossing,
braided rugs, copper enameling,
copper tooling, drawn work, dried
arrangements, hoked rugs, Italian
hemstitching, pine needle craft,
rush chair bottoming, Swedish
darning, tin can craft, and wood
carving.
Craftsmanship developed at
these workshops has now grown
into several private businesses.
Mrs. Elton Bryum of Gates coun
ty informed the ladies that she is
now selling copper tooled articles
at several craft centers in the
state. She said, "1 have stopped
using store-bought designs and am
using my original designs." Mrs. |
Bryum says she continues attend
ing the workshop searching for
newer techniques.
Mrs. W. L. Forbes of Camden
county showed the group a tea
towel she had made using Swedish
darning her first year at camp
She compared it with a stole, pock
2 1 book and hat she has made since
then.
Although there were cut fingers
from wood carving, tired arm mus I
cles from braiding rugs, and tired '
eyes from Italian hemstitching
and drawn work, the women glow
ed with pride as they displayed
their finished products on the fi
nal night of the workshop.
There were approximately 24
dried flower arrangements made
using driftwood and cypress knees.
Mrs. Richard Landon of Weaver
ville had the largest number of
women io her class. She taught
them drawn work.
Producer Says
Quality Counts
Hollywood (AP) ? Too many
American movie producers publi
cize the millions spent on a film
instead of the film's quality.
Producer Jerry Wald says this
and calls neither a big budget nor
a big star any guarantee of suc
cess.
And Wald, producer of such
films as Peyton Place and The
Long, Hot Summer, uses Room at
the Top to prove his point.
He says it is a big box office suc
cess without the aid of top stars
and made for a mere fraction of
what many "super" flops cost.
It is the untried and untested
that pay off, according to Wald.
"Frankly, I would prefer to re
frain from thinking how much a
film is going to cost and concen
trate on what it has to say."
