Two canebrake rattle snakes met their Maker Monday. A 48 inch rattler was killed in the Wild wood section by David Midgett and Bubby Ipoek, both of Morehead City. They came upon the rattler while logging for the Willis Lumber Co. in the woods near the Wildwood cemetery. They beat it to death with a stick. The snake was taken to Rill Palmer, curator at the Hampton Marine museum, Morehead City, who has preserved it. froH SOUTH RIVER =? ^ Aug. 24 ? At 6 p.m Monday a 52 inch cane brake rattler was shot by Craig Robinson. 15, at his home on high way 24. His mother spotted the snake under a persimmon tree in their yard. Craig shot it with a shotgun, skinned it and is plan ning to make a belt from the skin. Canebrake rattlers are poison ous. Mr. Palmer, whose major interest is snakes, said that the recent cool weather has probably brought the snakes out. In hot weather, they don't move around much, preferring to stay hidden in dark cool spots. Actor Mischa Aucr was born in St. Petersburg. Russia, now known as Leningrad. Rotary Hears Report on Park A report mi the progress of a proposed private recreattov park in Newport was heard by the New port Rotary club Monday night at it* weekly meeting. Making the report was Let Ber cegeay, Newport town commission er and president of the Cherry Point Veteran's Housing Associa tion. Mr. Bercegeay reported that committees are now at work on the plans for the park, which will be built near Carteret Industries. l,ong-range plans call for the building of tennis courts, a com munity building, swimming pool and a Little League park, in addi tion to regular playground equip ment.
