Meares, Glou cester, recently received the silver wings and rating of an Air Force piot in a eeremony conducted at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas. The graduation mafked the cul mination of fourteen months of in tensive academic and flight train ing in both conventional and jet airereft. Lieutenant Meares received his commission through the AFROTC • program, upon graduation from tjie North Carolina State College of A&E in June 1959. The 23-year-old pilot is present ly assigned to Castle Air Force Base, California, attending flight transition school in the KC-135 jet raid-air refueler. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert C. Potter of 116 Orange St., Beaufort, takes a com pass bearing. He is a member of the class of 1961 at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. Before returning to Norfolk, Va., August 12, he received practical “at sea” experience in seaman ship, navigation, engineering and gunnery to prepare him for a com mission in the Naval service upon graduation from college. Mrs. Bert Conner carried her son, David, to Chapel Hill last Thursday for treatment. Mrs. Carroll Canfield and two boys and her brothers, Vernon and Richard, arrived last week. Their mother, Mrs. Louise Runnings, who spent some time here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Wil lis. will accompany the family back to their homes at Moss Point, Miss., Wednesday. Mrs. Elmer Dudley took her boys to a clinic at Chapel Hill last Thursday: Mr. and Mrs. William Willis and son, Bill, were dinner guests of her mother and family last Sun day.
