Church Observes Homecoming Photo by F. C. Salisbury Ilarlowe Methodist church, route 2 Newport, was the scene Sunday of a successful homecoming, the. first in 25 years, and church school rally day. Pastor of the church is the Rev. Jack Hunter. Markers Island to Host LDS Conference Sunday The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) will ' have its quarterly conference for the North Carolina District at Markers Island Sunday at the new ly-constructed Latter-Day Saints chapel. Meetings will be held from 10' a.m. to 12 noon and from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The public is invited. George Z. Aposhian, president of the Central Atlantic States Mission I , of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, will be the main speaker. President Aposhian is from Salt Lake City, Utah, but is now resid ’ ing at the mission headquarters in I Roanoke, Va. Before President Aposhian was called to head the mission in the states of Virginia, North Carolina, and part of West Virginia, he was a prominent leader for the church ’ in Salt Lake City for many years. He has been a councilman, a bish op and also a stake president. Besides his many church duties, (president Aposhian has been a prominent business man in the Salt Lake Valley. He was the former president of a Lions club, a mem ber of the Desert Industries board, and president of the Olympus Board of Education. Among his activities, he was for several years responsible for the camping program for the LDS girls in the Salt Lake Valley and was instrumental in building a large lodge in one of the canyons there. President Aposhian also supervised the operation of a lodge for a camp already established in another of the canyons. These lodges will accommodate about 3,000 girls from the ages of 12 to 18 years, and will in the next few years accommodate up to 6,000 or 7,000 each year. * Since president Aposhian came to the mission in April of 1959, proselyting activities have greatly increased and over 821 new mem bers have joined the church. Between Sunday’s two sessions, dinner will be spread on the grounds, weather permitting; oth erwise, in the recreation hall. Alton Willis is president of the Harkers Island branch of the 'church. News from \ RUSSELL'S CKtt Sept. 21—The Rev. Wesley Mayo, Bridgeton, preached a fine sermon in the Christian church Sunday. The Rev. Willie Stilley, Bridge ton, filled his regular appointment in the Baptist church Sunday. Master Albert Dunkle was given a “Go-away party” Thursday night - by his Sunday school teacher, Tom my Russell. Albert left Friday for Durham to enter school. He re ceived many nice gifts. Mr. and Mrs. H. Small, Mill f Creek, were the Sunday afternoon guests of her mother, Mrs. W. R. Powell and brother, Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Fodrie went to Veterans hospital in Fay etteville Sunday to be at the bed side of her brother, who is serious ly sick. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Baker a fine son in Morehead City hospital. Mrs. Baker was former ' ly Miss Marsha Morton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Morton Jr. Mr. W. T. Russell went to Glou cester Sunday and was the guest of Mr. Nat Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Worthington made a business trip to Greenville last week. Mr. and Mrs. Rone Wallace of South River visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stallings Sunday night. Mr. Oscar Pittman and brother, Thurman Pittman were in Orien tal Sunday. Their father, Mr. Hay wood Pittman, returned home with them. Mr. Rufus Carraway and son, Carroll, of Elizabeth City spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Guy Carraway. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Lawrence spent the weekend at their home on the creek. Mr. and Mrs. Bill McIntyre of Rocky Mount were over last week. Marine Pilot Ejects Safely A Whiteville, N. C., Marine jet pilot was picked up by a fishing boat in 1'amlico Sound early Tues day after he had ejected safely from his uncontrollable A4D Sky hawk jet. Second lieutenant Robert H. Mel ville, 23, said the controls in his plane jammed after entering a high speed bombing run. He eject ed at 15,000 feet. The plane crash ed in the water between Bay River and Mays Point. Lieutenant Melville is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Melville of route 1 Whiteville and the husband of the former Miss Marie Jenrette of Lake Waccamaw. After parachuting to the water uninjured, he inflated his rubber life raft and was afloat when a fishing boat from Hobucken pick ed him up. A few minutes later he was hoisted to a hovering Ma rine helicopter and returned to the air station. After examination by a Navy doctor at the station hospital, Mel ville quickly visited another pa tient at the hospital, his wife, who is expecting their first child. The Tar Heel pilot is a member of Marine Attack Squadron 533, a unit of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Chqrry Point. The Rev. J. B. Starnes Accepts Pastorate Here The Rev. J. B. Starnes has ac cepted the pastorate of the Faith Free Will Baptist church, More head City, replacing the Rev. Dav id Hutchinson. Mr. Starnes, a native of Kannap olis, comes here from Kinston. He served as pastor of the Winter green church at Cove City and Smith’s New Home church at Deep Run. The Starnes have four children and are living at 2200 Bridges St., Morehcad. City. I First FWB Church Will Start Revival Monday A revival meeting will begirt at the First Free Will Baptist church, Morehead City, Monday and con tinue through the following Sunday night, Oct. 2, with the Rev. Gor don R. Sebastian, Stacy, as guest speaker. Services will begin each night promptly at 7:30 with special and congregational singing under the direction of Albert McElmon. Mr. Sebastian is from Illinois where he attended the state university. He served four years in the US Navy, and in 1959 was graduated from the Free Will Baptist Bible college, Nashville, Tenn. He has done pastorate work in Florence, S. C., Nashville and Co lumbia, Tenn., and is now pastor of the Stacy FWB church. In announcing the revival, the pastor, Rev. Seldon Bullard, states that he feels the church is very fortunate in being able to secure the services of Mr. Sebastian for the revival. “He has a dynamic message, condemns sin, and upholds the Bible as the only inspired message from God to man," Mr. Bullard said. Tho public is invited to each service. Church Announces Saturday Song Service The Church of God, at 13th and Evans streets in Morehead City, will have a song service tomorrow night at 7:30 at the church. All singers, church groups, and the public are invited, announces the pastor, the Rev. Paul Dingess. The Ladies’ Auxiliary will sell chicken and pastry plates from The Rev.
