THE HAPPY TIMES Newspaper for Boys and Girls_ It*i Storyti me Red Akers Home Run Red Akers slashed out a home run, but instead of running, he just stood and watched the ball sail over tbe fence and land in the tall grass in Mr. Conway’s apple orchard, where Mr. Conway was i waiting, as usual. He had a big, old, wooden chair in which he could sit and lean back against an apple tree with his heavy, thick lcnsed glasses on. “Aw,- shucks,” Red Akers said, "I’m sorry. 1 didn’t really aim to hit it over the fence.” What he meant was that we couldn’t ever be happy about hitting a home run, because every time a ball went over the fence, Mr. Conway would 'go after it and keep it. Mr. Conway really wasn’t mean, and even we boys could sec his point, for we just didn’t have enough will power or whatever it takes to pick up a ball without also filling our pockets with those fine red apples. We were all about to leave the lot when Red Akers happened to notice something. “Look!” he ex claimed. “Mr. Conway is down on his knees, in the tall grass!” i “He sure wants to break up this game, that’s for certain,” said one of the boys. “That’s not all ot It,” replied Red. “Looks like the old man has lost his glasses.” For a long time we stood and watched Mr. Conway feeling around in the grass, and then he seemed to give up and started to Happy Birthday Sept. 27: Beverly Dawn Ricks, Biloxi, Miss., was 7 years old. . BOTA^N SUMMER COLO TAKE /z-^ L ward the chair, holding his hands out and feeling for the chair, as though he were almost blind. "You know what?” exclaimed Red suddenly. “I’m going to look for Mr. Conway’s glasses.” The rest of us went along, too, with Red leading. He called out, “Oh, Mr. Conway, we’re not going to bother your apples—we re just going to find your glasses!” The old man looked around and smiled just a little. “I’d be nighty obliged to you, son,” he said. “I could hardly get back to the house without my glasses.” Red quickly found the glasses, and one of the other boys found the ball that had been knocked over the fence, and Red walked toward the old man. “Here’s your glasses, sir,” he said, “and here’s the ball you were looking for.” When Mr. Conway got his glass es on, we were surprised to see tears in his eyes. In a husky voice he said. “Thank goodness for boys with eyes that are young and keen.” Then he motioned for all of us to come closer, and we saw, to our surprise, that he had friendly eyes. “Boys,” he said, “over there un der that tree the ground is covered with apples. Help yourself. I'm going to the house for a minute to get all those baseballs I’ve been Keeping. They ought to last you all summer.” —Adapted from Mark Hager in The Lookout The population of Johannesburg, South Africa, is 1,052,600. 13 Members Enroll in Club The Happy Times editor is over joyed this week!
