Howland D13,20 the Pirate FHA Panel Discussion Leads To AHS School Spirit Day By MARJORIE WEBB Good day, folks! I hope all of you are happy. I know the Students of AHS are happy and busy and let’s see why. The Pirate, our 1961 annual, has been completed and sent to press, much to the satisfaction of the annual staff. We know it will be one of the best and we thank you again, seniors. The FHA met Friday afternoon, Dec. 2, in the auditorium. The meeting was called to order by the president. The minutes were read and approved and the treas urer’s report given. Following this, it was announced the FHA would give a Christmas party. Plans will be announced. The program consisted of a pan el discussion on school spirit. The moderator was Gloria Parker and the panel members were Jencey Mason, Carolyn Gaskill and Bren da Smith. It was brought to our attention that we shouldn’t complain about the manner of our instruction and the amount of work we have. Our teachers are in an orientation phase with the semester schedule, as, the students are, and they are trying to cover all the material possible in a short time. It was suggested that the teachers as sign fewer lessons on nights when ball games are scheduled. We were reminded also that we are not supporting the cheerlead ers and basketball teams as well as we should. Other points discuss ed included the fact that we need more cooperation and unity of the whole high school. Just as one ball player cannot play a game alone, so one student cannot sup port a project and see it to a suc cessful end alone. We do not show pride in our school and supplies, as evidenced by lipstick marks on our books and on the bathroom walls. How many of us have just laughed off or agreed with slurring remarks made about AHS? This enlightening discussion made us decide that on Friday, Dec. 9, we would inaugurate School Spirit Day. Everyone was requested to wear school colors, smile more and be particularly friendly. The panel again had a discussion, this time for the school as a group. A big pep rally sent our teams off for the game at Smyrna. The re sults will be reported next week. The Pirates played at Smyrna Dec., 2. We were not fortunate to win leiftifh game. Saturday night, (Dec.* 3, we played Morehead City on their court. The girls won their first game. We are especially proud of Bonnie Brickhouse, who accounted for 44 of the 63 points. The boys were overcome by a fast Morehead team. Dec. 6 the Pirates were host to the Dover teams. It was a special night, for both boys and girls walk ed away with victories. We are very proud of the Pirates. Mr. Senior The first Mr. Senior to represent AHS this year is 6-foot Daniel (Danny) Houston Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harvey of Atlantic. This curly-haired blond was born in Reidsville on Jan. 25, 1943. Danny has favored french fries and fried chicken to bring him to his present 150 pounds. Now that he has grown, he says that his oth er favorites include song Lonely Teenager, singer Brenda Lee, class in American Problems, and Mr. Johnson as a teacher. Elizabeth Taylor and Steve Reeves are his favorite film stars and watching tv is his hobby. “Lord in this world” is most often heard from Danny, since it Is his favorite phase. His pet peeve, a good one I think, is people who talk abotft other people and can’t seem to mind their own affairs. Danny has participated in bas ketball and baseball, junior and senior plays, 4-H, monogram club, and student council during his high school days. He has served as an officer in the junior class and is the photographer for the animal staff. Danny’s future plans are indefinite but we wish him the best in everything. State, Newport Sign Contract For Water lteceafly completed was the for mal contract between the town of Newport and the Newport prison camp. The contract provides for the town’s supplying water to the prison camp. The state has agreed to install a 6-inch water main 3,200 feet long, connecting to a 6-inch water main in town. The main will be installed along the shoulder of the road be tween the town and the prison camp. A fire hydrant on prison camp the property ean be protected in case of fire. The town will own the installations put tai by fhe slate and will supply water to all slate installations on the Hites at Com mercial rate, but the state will not be billed for such service until the amount of billing equals the amount invested by the state. In other words, the state, in a sense, is loaning the town the money for installing the water mains and the town is repaying it by furnishing wa,ter service free until the amount of the ‘loan” is met. The contract permits other per sons along the line to the prison camp to use town water, so long as their use does not limit the amount of water available to the prison camp.
