Thoughts (Continued from Page 3, Section 3) I am so thankful for the many wonderful organizations that lend their help to the less fortunate, and also for the individuals that see the great need and do something about it. Let us go back again and think i of the little town of Bethlehem, all was quiet, something was to hap pen. It could be felt all around. A baby was to be born, a baby who was to be King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and we hear these words “AND YOU SHALL FIND HIM WRAPPED IN SWADDLING CLOTHS, LAYING IN A MANGER. Yes, a manger, for there was no room in the Inn. Christmas should be a day of Joy and we can make it one. We mustb ring our gifts to the Christ Child as in the days of old, and make him the center of our Christ mas planning. When we do this we shall indeed experience the best Christmas ever. And now to each of you, wher ever you are, I wish Peace and Joy through the Christmas season and may the New Year have in store for you much happiness. Town Council Foresees Street Name Trouble Chillicothe, Ohio (AP) — City councilmen here have decided not to change the name of Oak Lawn Drive to Tinker Drive, as had been suggested. They’ll call it Wildwood Drive in stead. ' The councilmen were afraid that if future development called for a South Tinker Drive, a careless sign painter in abbreviating South might forget to put a period after the “S,” resulting in STinker Drive. Under 21 Columnist Releases Essays Which Won Cash Prizes (Note: This column usually appears on the editorial page. It will be in its usual place Tuesday). By DAN HALLIGAN More than 3,000 entries were re ceived in the “Under 21” Christ mas essay contest which ended two two weeks ago and choosing the two winners was a “very difficult job,” according to the judges but they did come up with the essays they believed covered the subject matter better than all the other entries. The topic was this: “What f Be lieve the World Needs Most this Christmas.” Winner of $25 in cash in the Class A division for seventh, eighth and ninth grade pupils is Andrzej Koczapski, 11 year-old seventh grade pupil of Chilliwack, B. C., Canada, Martha Milstead, 16, a San Au gustine, Texas, high school junior, is the winner of $25 in cash in the Class B division for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. According to the judges, any of several hundred entries were about as sincere as the entries submitted by Martha and' Andrzej but their essays contained that little some thing “extra” that set them apart. Andrzej had this to say: “I be lieve the world needs friendship more than anything else this Christmas. With more friendship, we wouldn’t worry about atomic bombs and rockets. Therefore, we could save money on defenses. If friendship was a widely practiced art, scientists would not have wast ed time devising war machines and we would have a better civiliza tion. “Friendship begins in the home. When families get along together, it is a start for the community to agree. When communities are get ting along well, it helps the whole country to unite. If whoje coun tries unite, it is a start toward the unity of the world. “Christmas is Christ’s birthday. For a birthday present and for the benefit of the world, why don’t we give each other what He came to earth to teach? Christ said, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” When we do this, we are practicing friendship.” Martha wrote she believed the world needed understanding more than anything else this Christmas, saying, “The dictionary defines understanding as being a mutual agreement of ideas that settle dif ferences. Today there are many differences which involve and con cern all—the controversy over in tegration, segregation, disarma ment, dating, dictatorship, delin quency, democracy, marriage—all of these and more scream for rec ognition and understanding. “It should be remembered that with understanding comes forgive ness, with forgiveness, love; with love, peace; and with peace, hap piness. “If understanding was an item to be bought or sold, received or given at Christmas, it would be highly the wish of all to receive it. However, perhaps it is forgotten that the greatest joy comes from giving. “This Christmas, trim tj^e tree with love, light the candles with ■ ■ ....— -ii BEST WISHES The very best of Holiday Wishes to all our friends, Guthrie-Jones Drug Co. Beaafort peace, sing the carols with hope, jingle the bells for pure joy, and wrap your gifts with understand ing.” Actually all you teen-agers and children who submitted entries are winners in a sense. If nothing else, you put your thoughts down on pa per and you started to think. Why not follow up your essays by prac ticing daily what you wrote? We all know the beginning of anything, whether it be good or bad, doesn’t start in a nation’s capital, with a law making body, a ruler, a television show, on an athletic field or elsewhere. What ever you want to do or be, what ever you want your country and the world to do or be, starts in the home. If you kids practice daily what you preach, some of that love, that kindness, that peace and that un derstanding will rub off on other members of your families, on your neighbors and friends, on strang ers and will eventually be carried throughout the world. Try this ap proach. Thanks to all of you who sub mitted entries, all of which were thoroughly read and considered.
