ME7-3910 By KEN NEWSOM Fishing is off to an early start around the county with charter boats, piers and headboats all sharing in the success. Reports coming in indicate an early appearance of many of the spring species, which, if favorable weather prevails, should give the area one of the best spring fishing seasons in years. Red snapper heads the list of species to arrive early this year. Anglers aboard the headboats Dan co and Carolina Queen are enjoy ing phenomenal reef fishing which has been the best of any season since the boats have started opera ting in this area. . Fishermen are coming in loaded with red snapper, grouper, sea bass and porgies. Both boats are sailing on a weekend schedule at present, but daily trips will begin soon. Ocean pier fishing is producing an abundance of whiting with oc casional bluefish. So far, the blue fish have not been extensively fish ed for, due to the excellence of whiting fishing, and most observ ers believe that the “spring run” of bluefish is due to begin any day. Offshore trolling was good dur ing the weekend and was high lighted by the season’s first catch of king mackerel. Fred Hayes and a group from Greensboro, fishing aboard the Dolphin III, had a catch of 11 kings, 30 amberjack, 4 alba core and assorted bottom fish. The largest of the amberjack was weighed in at 80 pounds which is a record for the young season. On the charter boat Dolphin, Ray Beard, and others from Butner, caught seven kings, 25 amberjack, two albacore and several bottom fish. The blues have arrived at Cape Lookout and small boats trolling near the breakwater there have been encountering schools of large bluefish, according to E. T. Credle, Harkers Island. Some of the blues have weighed over two pounds a piece and catches have been heavy. On Tuesday, April 23, Mrs. Har ry Salter, Morehead City, of the Fabulous Fisherettes, caught a 7V$-pound black drum while fish ing off Sportsman pier. Hawks Chalk Up Second Win, Beat Vanceboro Newport’s Hawks marked up their second win of the season with a 9-8 victory over Vanceboro Wed nesday afternoon. The Hawks now have a 2-2 sea son record, having dropped two games to the Carteret-Craven con ference leader, Smyrna. Newport was on their own home ground and jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Dwayne Oglesby started the rally with a base hit. Oglesby stole sec ond and third on errors. Second baseman Billy Livingston drove Oglesby home with a sacri fice Hy. Sammy Lilly was issued a walk and Tony Minatel cleared the bases with a home run. The visiting Vanceboro team came alive and scored eight runs. Going into the bottom of the sixth frame the Hawks found themselves on the short end of a 8-6 score. Newport’s Cecil Hardesty rapped his second double of the day to start another Hawk rally. Leo Win berrv went to first on an error, Oglesoy was sent to first with a base on balls, Livingston collected a double to send in two men and Oglesby scored on a wild throw. The Morehead City Little league opens its '63 season, with a single game tomorrow morning and a doubleheader in the afternoon, as I he farm teams of the Morehead City Little league swing into ac tion. Play will be at Chadwiek field on the Camp Glenn school grounds. All six clubs in the Minors have awaited opening day with great enthusiasm. The league encourag es the parents and friends of the boys to see the games. At the parent night this past Mon day, plans materialized to expand the Morehead City program for the third time in four years. Thomas Vinston offered to work with 30 boys who could not have been plac ed under our former set-up. Following Mr. Vinston’s lead, sev eral fathers offered to help; so on Saturday afternoon at 4:30, all boys who were not placed on either Of the six teams in the Minors or the four-tram Major, are to meet with Mr. Vinston and his coaches at Luptcn’s field. The league will outfit these boys with t shirt and baseball cap. The boys will divide in groups and par ticipate as do the other boys in the program, and will provide replace ments on the other teams. This Rookie league offers a fine chance for the young boy of 8 to compete with boys, who in most instances will be his pwn age, and in this limited group, more time can be taken to help him in his initial approach to baseball. At the Majors opener on Wed nesday, May 8, at 4 p.m., all boys' are expected to be on hand in uni form to participate in the pre-game ceremony, the Majors. Minors, and also the Rookies. In .1961, the Minors expanded to 120 boys, making the program available to a total of 180 boys. Now with the new expansion, the league will play 210 boys. Our thanks especially go to Mr. Vinston in that his boy was placed on one of the farm teams, and he knew it when he presented him self. His remarks at this time were to the effect that he wanted all the boys who wanted to play to be giv en a chance. This kind of cooperation through out the years in the Morehead City Little league, with the help of the t jwn and townspeople, is what has made the program so successful. Billy Casper and Jack Nicklaus finished fourth in three PGA golf tournaments last year. > Junior Ball Players To Register At Schools Tomorrow Registration for the Couhty Ju nior baseball league will be held tomorrow, according to A.
