WE HAVE FULL INFORMATION ON CONTINENTAL CASUALTY COMPANY'S GOLDEN 65 HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM • •Officials Hope To Keep Draw Bridge Closed The Atlantic Beach board of al dermen agreed on a plan of action Friday to eliminate what mayor A. B. Cooper calls a ‘ serious, even dangerous traffic problem.” The mayor suggested to the board that some action must be taken to end Sunday afternoon traffic confusion over the Atlantic Beach bridge. The worst hours, he said, are from 4 to 7 p.m., when benchgoers and sightseers are back up from Salter Path to Fort Macon, waiting to cross over the bridge. He cited two instances already this season of ambulances from Morehead City being held up in traffic for an hour or more while the draw bridge was in operation; and then being able to only creep through the traffic snarl. A plan to do away with the hazard involves a joint attempt by the town of Atlantic Beach and the county chamber of commerce to convince federal authorities to halt boat traffic between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 Sunday afternoons from June through August. The mayor asserted that if boats requiring the use of the draw bridge could be prohibited from navigating Bogue Sound during those hours, the problem would be “just about licked.” A request was also made to the owners of pleasure boats to try and schedule their activities so as to avoid using the bridge at all on Sunday afternoons. It was agreed by the board that letters would be sent to the district Army engineer, Wilmington, Con gressman David Henderson, Gov ernor Sanford and W. F. Babcock, director of the state highway com mission, asking for their help. Present at the meeting were Ben Alford, president, and W. P. Bul lock, manager of the county cham ber of commerce. They met with the board to request that the town of Atlantic Beach join in a county wide advertising project to publi cize Carteret's tourist attractions. Mr. Bullock told the board that the chamber of commerce was es pecially interested in seeing to it that publicity be given the Blue Marlin Festival, the beaches and golfing facilities. After a brief discussion, the bolfra granted the request by ap propriating $250 to the chamber of commerce from funds marked for advertising the Atlantic Beach re sort area. The aldermen agreed that a joint effort by all municipali ties would be more beneficial to all. In other business, the board de cided to discontinue a $500 appro priation to Morehead City for the operation of the county police ra dio network. Milton G. Coyle, town clerk, termed the action “neces sary beeause of increased cost in the maintenance and operation of the Atlantic Beach police radio.” The town clerk also informed the board that the town’s new all purpose truck, for trash collection and street cleaning, would begin operation on July 1. Mr. Coyle reported that the entire project would cost in the neighborhood of $6,900 for the first year. The truck alone cost $5,000, the balance of expenditure for the new sanitation department being a per manent employee and part time help during the summer months. >---—1— Port Calendar Morehead City State Port Bischofstejn — Arrived Sunday from Baltimore, loaded tobacco for northern Europe. He even sees the funny side of a hogshead of tobacco and in the course of a year thousands and thousands of them pass through bis realm, the dockside warehouses at Morehead City port. He said he had just got to re membering about the “Sheriff.” Some years ago the Edmundsons, who now live in Beaufort, resided in a small town in another state and in the close vicinity of the home occupied by the county sher iff who had a friendly,* part-collie dog. The collie took a liking to the Edmundsons and became a part time boarder. It frequently spent the night with the Edmundson family. Jim and Mrs. Edmundson didn’t know his name so Jim call ed him “Sheriff.” One day the sheriff’s spouse call ed on the Edmundsons and in the course of social chit-chat Jim in quired about “Sheriff.” " ‘Sheriff’ collies to tail oo us pretty frequently,” Jim said, “and I hope you don’t mind it We like him. Matter of fact he spent all last weekend with us. “Well! I wondered where he was! I hate to have to tell you this but my husband gets to drinking and sometimes doesn’t come home for as many as three and four days,” the sheriff’s wife blurted out.
