PREPAREDNESS
The huge sums of money
recently appropriated by
Congress and the Federal
Government for National
Preparedness will have to
be raised by taxation. This
increase in the Federal
Tax on electric service will
be borne by the Power
Company serving you, ,
without any increase in the
electric bill. This is just ohe
of the many similar obli
gations your Power Com
pany is now carrying in
order to help maintain the
system of operating our
Government.
Father: “You have been
calling on my daughter for
more than a year. What
are your intentions?
Young Man: “I had
hoped, sir, to become an
addition to your family.”
Father: “Nothing doing
in Additions, young fellow.
You’ll have to subtract.”
The work in your home
can be greatly simplified
by using electrical equip
ment. The G. E. Refrigera
tor and range will make
your cooking problems a
real pleasure, and the sav
ing . you will be able to
make in saving leftovers
and foods that otherwise
would spoil, and also on
lower cost cooking and re
frigeration will go far in
lowering the cost and in
creasing the joy of living.
Enjoy life more by living
electrically.

THE BANK SWALLOW
The Bank Swallow, the
smallest of the Swallow
family, is widely distribut
ed both in Europe and Am
erica. It ranges over most
of Eastern America and is
common in Western North
Carolina.
It is five or five and a
half inches long; the upper
parts are brownish gray;
the lower parts are white
with the exception of a
brownish gray band across
the breast; the throat is
white; there is a small
tuft of feathers above the
hind toe.
This Swallow usually ex
cavates horizontally a hole
in a bank to a depth of two
or three feet in which it
builds its nest. It lays from
four to six pure white
eggs. Sometimes as many
as a hundred or more
are .close together. Its food
is composed altogether of
insects, which it with wide
spread mouth catches on
the wing. Its song is a mere
twitter.
The Bank Swallow is an
interesting and a very use
ful bird.
