The visitor was an honor guest at a social gathering of young people of the Baptist chur ch Saturday night. *# # * Miss Virginia Atkins was given a birthday party Wednesday night in White Hall by her roommates and friends. She is now a student a t Appalachian State Teachers College at Boone, N. C. "SWISS NEWS Rev. J. 0. Summerlin, who has been pastor o f the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church here for the past six months, has resigned to accept work closer to his home. Rev. Summer lin’s work with this church has been very successful and his leaving is greatly regretted. Mrs. W. J. Shepherd is ill in Biltmore Hospital. The wedding ceremony was performed on Thurs day, Sept. .4 in Greenville, S. C. Mr. Shepherd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shep herd of Swiss. Whisnant was named as candidate but he recently withdrew from the race since he is of military age and felt that he might be of greater ser vice with the - armed forces VICTORY CLUB "NEWS • The Burnsville Vidtory Club met with Billie Marie Bennett on Tuesday night, Sept. 29th. The evening was spent writing to Yancey county boys in service, and the following report was made Approximately $1200.00 worth of War Bonds were sold by Victory Club girls at the Theatre last week, and 7 mufflers have been knitted and one skirt made for the Red Cross. The girls have received’ several answers from their Victory cards they have, written to boys in service.
