P. A. col lection center or sold to junk dealers 1s now 194,012 pounds. The reports gathered Wednesday evening listed* the following: To W. P. A. collection center, Spruce Pin 3, 82,602. Collected by Black Mtn., Railway, 27,000. Sold by Micaville high school, 58,670 for total of $349.00. Sold by Burnsville high school, 2i,295 for total of $90.88. .. Sold by Town of Burns ville, 4,445. Transportation is Problem The people of the county have shown an enthusiasm in the drive, and the school children have worked with zeal and determination; but the problem of trans portation Jias been the greatest drawback. Pri vate trucks have carried loads to junk dealers i n Asheville to move most of the 84,410 pounds that J have been sold direct t o Jlsata,. ___ ... _ . , Railway Cooperates The Bla e k Mountain Railway has cooperated in the drive by having em ployees in the county col lect scrap through the county. The flat car ship ped last week totaled 27, 1 ojo pounds. Quota is 100 Pound Per Capita The quota for the entire state is 100 pounds perj capita, and for the county this will mean nearly two million pounds. That means there’s a long way to go before the quota is> reached. Major Portion still On Hand A major portion of what has been collected is still in the county. None has been moved from Clearmont school where it is estimat ed that one of the largest amounts in the county has been collected. Some amount still remains at the consolidated schools and at the smaller schools throu ghout the county. Some of the larger piec es have not been turned in since there has been no fa cilities for cutting them up. ' ~ YANCEY COUNTY SCRAP CONTEST The Salvage Committee of Yancey county is offer ing a first, second and third prize to the schools which turn in the most scrap during the three weeks camp aign:— Oct. I—2 l —in the county. The first prize SIO.OO The secpnd prize 6.00 The third prize ...... 4.00 In order to give the smaller schools the same chance as the larg'eFschidbls the judging of the contest will be on a per capita basis. The total enrollment of the school l will be divided into the total poundage turned in to get J the average per child. The three schools with the ' highest average per child will be the winners When the scrap is collected an official government receipt must be given to the school and a cop/ turned over to the salvage committee. These will be given by the truck i drivers. Also to be eligible for the state contest the ; salvage cimmittee must have a copy of the official re ceipt. Be sure to ask your trtick driver for it as soon as .the scrap is weighed. The Salvage committee extends an appreciation to the various individuals and merchants who have made these prizes available.
