S: BUCKNER The Rev. and Mrs. Bur dette Thomas Nanney of Brevard have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Melba Rea Nanney of WeaverviHe and Brevard, to Cpl. James Stanley Buckner- of Mac bill Field in Tampa, Fla. Miss Nanpey is ,a mem ber of the faculty of the WeaverviHe high school, where she teaches drama tics, French and English. She attended Mars Hill college, Appalachian State Teachers’ college ht Boone, and later received-her de gree at Western Carolina Teachers’ college at Cullo whee. She is soloist for the choir at the WeaVer ville Baptist church. Cpl. Buckner is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Buckner of WeaverviHe. He has beens in military service for the past nine months. Denis Radford has left for Cecil’s Business College Asheville and Charles is off to the Navy. He asks that his friends write him. Miss Bertie Anglin and Grover -Gouge of Bakers ville stole a march on their friends last week and were married. Mrs. Bob Presnejl is very sick of double pneumonia. Also Mrs. Fred Phoenix has pneumonia. John Allen, son of Mrs. Cora Allen, is home from Gainesville, Ga. on a few days furlough. Miss Helen Hensley has gone to Baltimore, Md. to work. Floyd King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur King, is home from Detroit, Mich., where he is employed. We regret to learn of the illness of Mr. R. M. Frank Allen of United States Army stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. is here for a few days visiting his wife Dellma Hensley was home for the week end from Micaville. ' 7 Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rob erts of Buckner were vis iting relatives here Sunday THE YANCEY RECORD WOMANS CLUB The regular meeting of the Woman’s Club was held oh Thursday evening, Oct. 8 at the home of Mrs. H. G. Bailey with Mrs. Bertha Palmer and Mrs. John Rob inson as associate hostesses Mrs. Robingon, the pre sident, was in the chair during the business session and heard reports from several committees. An announcement of the home nursing class which % i a being held at the school was made and all club members were invited to attend. Mrs. J. S. LeFevre gave a -report of the dist rict Club meeting which she attended as a delegate from the Burnsville Club. The program subject was “Southern Gardens”, with Mrs. Fred Proffitt i n charge. Mrs. Proffitt made an introductory talk, and then presented the program. Mrs. Dover R. Fouts gave the history of the Federated Garden Clubs,, and a flower contest was held with Mrs. L. G. Dey ton winning first place. “Gardens Along the Ash ley River in South Caro lina” was given by Mrs. W. B. Wray, Jr., .‘North Car olina Gardens” by Mrs. i Hobart Ray and ‘.Virginia Gardens” by Mrs. J. S. Le- , Fevre. Mrs. V. J. Good mah showed a series of slides of Victory Gardens which are being grown in Yancey county. Mrs. C. M. Cheadle, Jr, and Mrs. A. E. Parrish were guests at the meeting and the following new members were welcomed into the club: Mrs. G." Deyton, Mrs. Hershel Hol combe, Mrs. V. J. Goodman Mrs. W. Dl . Jester, Miss Dorothy Turner and Miss Osie Bennett. A social hour followed the program, and the hos tesses served refreshments which carried out the Hal lowe’en motif. The next meeting will be , held on Nov. 12 and the | hostesses will be Mrs. Cla rence Briggs, Mrs. J. B. ; King and Mrs. B. M. Con nelly. ; FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshman class of Burnsville high school will sponsor a program by Carl Story and his mountain eers on Monday night Oct. 26. GREEN MOUNTAIN Jesse Howell who is in college at Johnson City visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Howell. Bill Renfro who has been working in Ohio is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Trttturj) Dipartmi»t e> ■ • GIRLS NOW TAKE TRAINING AT THE NYA CENTER At the Asheville NYA War Training and Produc tion project center, located at Newbridge, girls are now taking training in war industry work. These training courses- include machine, aircraft wood working, mechanical, elec trical, radio, welding and sheet metal. The NYA has entered into a contract with Ashe ville College and girls who are in the classes will stay at the college. They will report to the production center each day for in struction and returft to the college each evening. They will be under the same re gulations as the girls who attend college. PENSACOLA NOTES AND PERSONALS The Rev. Van Hensley and the Rev. A. B. Lowery 'preached at the Free Will Baptist church here Sun day. There was a large crowd present. Rev. T. E. Woody attend ed the memorial service for Mr. Ballard which was held at Barnardsville Sun day morning. The Free Will Baptist church gathered its pro duce for the Orphanage at Middlesex and sent it off Monday. There was a full truck load. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bene dict have gone to their home in Florida after spen ding summer at their <?abiri on Cattail Greek. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wheeler and children and Mr. and Mrs. Benedict. were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Pearson Riddle Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Hagger of Miami have bought proper ty here and will come back next year. A number of friends helped John Atkins to cel ebrate his birthday on Sunday. Barton Rice is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elzie Rice. He is working at Newport News, Va. and - is off for a few days be cause of injuries sustained when he fell recently. Rev. Ben Lee Ray, re turned Sunday from King sport, Tenn.,. where he has been in a revival. Mrs. Clyde Penland and daughter, Katie, left Mon day for Detroit.
