A Partnership Entered as second-class matter November 11th, 1936, at the Poat Office, at Burnsville, North Carolina, under the Act of March 3, 1879. FARM ENLARGEMENT LOANS CAN BE MADE THROUGH FSA HERE *n- - .1, Farmers owning farms too small to be complete units now have an oppor tunity to borrow money with which to purchase enough additional land to enlarge their present farm to a complete unit. An announcement to this ef fect has been made by the County Farm Security Ad ministration office. That part of the FSA program, formerly known as Tenant Purchase See-, tion, now known as Farm Ownership Section, has en larged its scope of work to include this new program, and will now make this new type of loan as well as continue to make loans to tenant farmers who are not now land owners. The regulations covering this loan are practically the same as those that have been used in thp past for making tenant purchase loans. The farm must- be a family-type unit; that is of the proper size to uti lize the family labor to the best advantage, and still not so large that they need to employ much outside la bor. A purchase price lim itation in each county puts a top limit on the dollar value of the * small farm which the family now owns It is possible through this program to secure money with which to make needed repairs, in addition to the purchase cost. The present improvement and repairs must be within the limitations of the War Board Order L 41, which at the present time limits any new construction to the dwelling to S2OO and SI,OOO on agricultural buildings. If there is a mortgage on the present small farm, it is possible to have this re financed providing no oth er federal agency is now financing the applicant, and providing the refinan cing will be less than fifty percent of the total loan. ' Farmers who have small farms and are interested in securing funds with which to purchase addi- SIXTH REGISTRATION The Sixth Registration will be conducted for afl males who have reached their 18th birthday since June 30, 1942. The more people have, the more easily they are pleased with simple gifts that reflect thought and ■personal labor. Nature has been so lavish with us in the mountains that what we take for granted is of ten a rare treat to others. There is ouif corn meal. Freshly milled from new r corn, neatly bagged and labeled it delights city peo ple who often have none other than degerminated stuff resembling saw dust and not.like the live, nut sweet product that makes bread and milk a dish for the gods. Tiny, wild strawberries, whose flavor cannot be ri valed in stores, when made into jam, never fail to ev oke appreciation from tho se who have experienced the tediousness of gather ing this elusive berry. Wild mint leaves, gathered in season and spread in the shade to dry, make delici ous tea and when sent with a bag of sassafras roots combine fragrance with cheer. With just a little fore thought earlier in the year, can produce many novel gifts. A row of broom corn turns into useful hearth brooms bou nd with bark -and made like big ones, leading out the handle. Children and grown-ups love to “brush up” with them. Small, odd (Continued on page three) tional land should get i n touch with County Farm Security Administration Supervisor, Mack B. Ray, or any member of the County Farm Ownership Committee who are Ed King, John Holcombe and Dewey Silver.
