J “So They Say” . • It still isn’t possible that! it’s almost Christmas! Yet there’s the last-week rush of shoppers, and this year some are finding out what’s been true for years: that the home town merchants have mighty nice gifts of all kinds. Perhaps there’s been much-* more shopping this.^year, and we - ftnovv there’s been much more at home. „• Some things we miss; from the scene: The boys.i of course, who won t be here but who s:-nd their! best wishes. Then there are other things: Alf Bowditch selling turkeys. . the sound of fire works, tho there have been a few feeble retorts Os left-over crackers. . . Christmas music programs—bu: they wouldn’t be complete with out the Hubbard girls and others who’ve always tak en part. . *. . An abundant supply of fruitcake and Christtmas candies. A great deal of the bakings and makings have gene oft to camp! And that’s exactly as it should be! ... . Then, we miss the Christmas lights. We always though-: Burnsville about the pret-,, tiest of all the little towns to light up . . . the lights around the square and the tree in the Southeast cor ner, visible from points far away. These, shining on a new-fallen snow made an unfogettable pictufeTTT But the putters-up and takers-down of the lights are scattered and busy. . . Mayor Frank Lieutenant in Navy. . Bill Wray busy as head of ra tion board, an'd in other kinds of defense work. . . . Ed Bryant now chief de puty sheriff and keeper of the jail. . . . Cecil Angel very busy at Yancey Cyan ite company. . ! . John Rob inson (who saw that the lighting jsystem worked just right i in Seat.le, Wash. . . . Wood Butner on short vacation from Work in Alexandria, Va. ... Bill English busy at Farmers Federation. . . Doc Whis nant, getting teeth" in. or der. . . Ashton Ramsey, assistant postmaster, andj if you’ve been in for the mail, that’s enough said. . . and J. B. King busy too at this season. So, even if Christmas lighting -were permitted this ygar, we’d have to call in some new recruits for the job! ... . We’ve missed Christmas trees in some of the homes that usually have them, but the ones at the Whisnants,} the Penlands and the Hen-j sleys show up beautifully. . and we hear that Barbara Bowyer has a tiny one for her room. She’s quaran- Itined, but is getting along fine and will be out Dec ember 27. , . . We had pre pared a neat and express ive paragraph of season’s greetings when Grady lost the whole lot of Christmas cards he was taking to P. 0. iHe found them in time i. . , And who was the boy who took his Mom’s cards to mail last year an:’ found them at Reece’s two weeks after Christmas! . /. The Hennessees will ebser ve a “White Christmas” with a coat of paint, inside and out, for their home. Reminder: Today is the first day of winter! Just a touch of fall we’ve been having— maybe!
