THE YANCEY RECORD ESTABLISHED JULY, 1936 Editor Mrs. C. R. Hamrick Published Every Thursday By YANCEY PUBLISHING CO. A Partnership Entered as second-class matter November 11th, 1936, at the Post Office, at Burnsville, North Carolina, under tLs Act of March 3, 1879. Health Department News PUBLIC HEALTH IN YANCEY COUNTY June 1943—December 1943 Public health work is of vital importance, especially now, because it is preven tive. Doctors are so busy that it is impossible for therpj tQ answer over 75 per cent *of their calls- Our work is to eliminate that other 25 per cent of calls thru prevention of sickness when possible by vaccina tion - and immunization against communicable dis eases and keeping those who do contract these in side so that they will not infect other people. Our records show an in crease in some phases of the work; but in other dis eases a tendancy to slide on for another year or so. As you know this is a very dangerous thing to do. This shows.a little improvement in the attitude toward Pub lic Health, but there is still an alarming apathy toward health as a rule here. There are still a number of people who don’t realize that the only disease that does not hurt a child is the one he does not have. About 240 babies have been immunized against Diphtheria this year, in this office out cf a total of 385 live births. That leaves ;:ppro:dmaiefeg> liXL -babies who have bee¥ to tjy*if''prP' ate physicianV-trfiiave not been vaccinated at all- Has your baby been vaedinated? IT not you are not giving him an equal chance in life; with your neighbor’s child If your baby is six months old, please bring him in next Saturlay a. m. between 9-12. The vaccine is free and there are only two closes to be given, one mon th apart. We had 5 cases of Diph theria here in this county within the last 6 months. ! Typhoid The population of Yancey county is 17,212, and our re cords show that only M7, of that number were vacci nated against typhoid last year Don’t think that just because the incidence of typhoid fever has dropped almost 98 per cept that it is impossible for you to have it. It is not only pos ■ ■ ■ a ■ b e iTT'i a a FOR INSURANCE Lift* Health & Accident Hospitalization SEE ft ('•■ BAILEY Burnsville, N. If you took all three doses last year you should take one dose each year to keep up that immu nity and eliminate the ne cessity of having to take three doses again. It is free and a number of clin ics are held over the county at many different points so that all people might have a chance to get this service. Every person should have this and if you are between the ages of 1 and 55 years, be sure to get it. Only, 325 in the county were vaccinated against whooping cough and we have had at least one death from this disease- Also, there has been a serious epidemic on Jacks Creek which could have been pre vented At least "4 clinics were held at two different points there this past sum mer and whooping cough vaccine was given. Some parents were not looking out for their children very carefully. Let's see if we can’t prevent a similar oc curence next year. The usual clinics will be held in the spring and sum mer in this county. If an earlier date than they were held last year would be more acceptable to you, write us or see us and we .-nail- he glad -ie see what Ve can w ork out. A sched- be published in this paper for your benefit and posters will be displayed at the various clinic points Please observe the date and hour, and be on time. Only a minium number of visits will be made to each clinic, therefore it will be neces sary for you to be a: the first clinic in order, to get all your vaccine. These clinics are held over the county to make it possible for everyone to be vaccinated in spite of the poor transportation facili ties.
