S —.—t—__ VOLUME NINE —Men In Service— Wounded In Action Cpl. John S. Ledford who has been overseas 2 years with the Marine Corps has been wounded in action, a inter to his Mr. anu Mrs. Silas C. Ledford of Cane River, states. The letter read as follows: “Regret to inform you of the report just received that your son Cpl. John S. Ledford, sustained a gun shot wound of the back in action against the enemy in the Palau Islands. The re port further 9tates that he was admitted to a hospital on Oct. 16 for medical treat ment. “Because of the great vol ume of communications noiw required for essential mili tary operations, the report received was necessarily brief and did not disclose the extent of his injuries. Past experience indicates that details are seldom for-| warded if progress is fav orable.” Returns From Overseas Cpl. Jonh King, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. King of Burnsville, hss returned to the states after 13 mon-hs . service in the southwest Pacific area. Pfc. Bur pie Peterson, Jr., is now with a Marine Medi cal Battalion somewhere in the South Pacific. Pvt. Clyde A. Styles is stationed with the 60th re giment at Camp Blanding ~ Fla. Pvt. William Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Talmad ge Johnson of Ramsey town is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Duane Penland is now at the naval training station,! Corpus Christi, Texas. Pvt. Army Releases Pacific Area Mail Families of soldiers en gaged in operations in the Philippines will soon be receiving batches of mail that have been delayed for security reasons during the period preceding the invas- I ion of these islands. Some 400-000 letters and a large number of parcels were im- 1 pounded. This mail origina ted with units now engaged ! in American Army opera-j tions in the Philippines. HENSLEY David Bindley Hensley , 38, Route 5, Johnson City, was fatally injured Friday i night, Oct. 27 when the , motorcycle he was riding ■ ran off the road on a curve . on the State line road, about i three miles east of Hamp ton, and crashed into a pile [of rocks. He had been an , employee of the North American Rayon corpora tion for 16 years. . Brief services were held at the late residence on the Elizabethton highway at 10 , a. m. Sunday. Oct. 29 after which the body was taken to the Hampton & Cooper i cetfieferv in Yancey county, ! N. C., where another ser vice was held and burial took place, the Rev. Tom Harkleroad officiating. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Maude Hensley of Johnson City; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Back Hensley of Jonesboro; two brothers, Scott of the U. S. Army in the South Pacific. The mine is located on his prop erty in the Mine Fork sec tion, and Mr. Deyton was working alone at the time of the accident. | The cave in occurred about 11 o’clock and when h? did not return home members of the family went to the mine and his body v. as removed about 12 o’clock. NUMBER SIXTEEN Messages May Be Sent To Prisoners in Philippines Nov. 30 is Deadline For Messages The following telegram, relative to sending messa ges to Prisoners of War or civilian internees in the Philippines, \yas received yesterday by Mrs. Sam J. Huskins, chairman of the Yancey county chapter of! the Red Cross: Red Cross now prepared' to expedite communications' to Philippines. One Reds Cross message, on form 1616, will be accepted from any person in this country to any prisoner of war or 1 U. S. civilian internee. We cannot guarantee delivery but messages will be hand led by army postal service. Following points must be observed: 1. All messages must be written on form 1616—num ber of words limited by space on front and back of form. Forms now on file in each chapter. 2.
