Com Jr. (now Commander) Charles W. Brewer, U.S.N., 33, sighted a surfaced enemy. Pouring machine-gun-fire, a thousand founds, on the conning tower, he prevented the manning of anti-aircraft guns. Then came a violent explosion; flames filled the conning tower and enveloped the super-structure. Comdr. Brewer was awarded a Gold Star for the attack. C, The programs were very interesting and well arran-; ged. Mr- Pressley of the Coco-Cola Bottling works of Asheville presented sev eral reels of film showing 1 the various activities of the Red Cross to the armed forces in this country and overseas. Plans for organizing a speedy campaign and for getting all possible infor-! mation before the public were given by Mr. A. B. Penland cele-i 1 brated her 90th birthday i Sunday, Jan- 21st at the 1 home of her daughter, Mrs. Jackie McMahan. All of her! children were present and i also many friends and rela-l tives. She has 31 grand i children, 34 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild. Mrs- Penland enjoyed the occasion very much and is in excellent health according to her age. SOCIAL SECURITY BOARD ADVISES EM PLOYEES OVER AGE 65 TO INQUIRE Due to the fact that mica production has been reduc ed in this area, with mines and mica houses closing the | first of the year, D. W. | Lambert, Manager of the ! Social Security Board Field j Office in Asheville, suggests that all men and women who are now over 65 years old, and have not previous ly inquired about possible benefits, do so at once if they have been employed in jobs covered by the soc ial Security Act since Dec | ember 31, 1936 Mr. Lambert explained that it is very important for the wage earner to in quire after age 65, if no , longer employed or having a decrease in average mon thly wage after reaching age 65, because he can file , claim and “freeze” his wage record at the higher level, thus obtaining higher bene fits when the worker retir es completely.
