C. (I. B. WESTALL, BURNSVILLE) Health Department News ( The Health Officer has recently completed the phy sical examination of the Eirst and Third grade pu pils in all schools in the three counties. The following reports have been made: 2267 child ren were examined, 1498 were leferred to their phy-J sician or dentist -for the correction of physical de fects Dental defects head the list of abnormalities. Next are enlarged and in fected tonsils and enlarged adenoids. Parents should realize the importance of these exami nations. Many of these children have never been examined by a physician, and some few cases of val vular heart disease were found. These are so serious that the nurses... visit the parents of these children to explain this defect and to urge that the children be taken to their private physician at* once. In our ! opinion, almost one hund red percent of these cases of heart disease, as well as cases of Rheumatism, Rhe-! umatic fever, St Vitus danCe, Arthritis, Bright’s disease, and many other serious conditions arise from focal infection in the tonsils; and, less often, from abscessed teeth. Many children have only slight arthritis when a joint will be sore for a day or two, then another joint will become involved. This frequently occurs without pain or soreness or swelling of the tonsils. Yet, the trou ble is located in the tonsils in most cases from a low grade infection, incapable of causing soreness or pain. “We find that in many cases of failures in school, the child misses too much school. If the parents only realized that nothing short of life and health is so im portant for a child to go to school every day, it would be a great advance The folloming children were found free of physi cal defects. We have not taken into account varia tions as to weight since par- THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 1015 ents vary markedly in size and the averaee is, to me, of only negligible signifi ence. A great number of children were found t o have only slight defects such a» unclean teeth, or hands, slightly stooped shoulders, etc. We hope that by next year we will have a much larger num ber of children without de fects. Congratulations to these children and their parents: Christine Wilson, 3rd grade, and Jo Alice Wilson Ist grade, Bald Creek, dau ghters of Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Wilson. Christine Barber, 3rd grade, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. F. R. Barber, Burnsville; Jimmie Laugh run, Ist grade, son of Mr and Mrs. Paul Laughrun, Burnsville. iDr B. B. McGuire). PRE-SCHOOL CLINICS Starting March Bth, the Health Department will hold the annual pre-school clinics in "the schools. These clinics are for the children who will start to school next year. It is of vital import ance that each child should have a complete physical examination before start ing to School If any defects are found they should be corrected as soon as possi ble so that the child can start the school year in good health. Letters will be sent to parents who have children to enter school next yaer. Please note the hour and date carefully and be sure to bring or send your child- EYE CLINIC An eve clinic w r ill be held at the Burnsville Health De partment on March 21 and 22 if weather permits. If you have a child that you- think needs glasses, please bring him into the Health Department to have his eyes tested on or before March 9th or 10th. We can take only child ren.
