LATE TOMATO BLIGHT !
CONTROLLED IN TESTS
The worst epidemic of
late blight in tomatoes in
years swept across the
mountain areas this sum
mer and virtually all toma
to plants were destroyed ex
cept where growers used'
fungicidal dusts or sprays
to control the disease.
Howard R. Garriss, Ex
tension plant pathologist at
State College, arranged
through county agents for
a series of demonstrations.;
After the tests were con
cluded, he made the follow
ing statement: “Fermate, a
new fungicide, gave fair to
good control of tomato dis
eases, where it was applied
regularly and properly, hut
•fixed’ coppers such as yel
low cuprous oxide and Di
basic copper sulphate re
main as the best fungicides
for tomatoes in North Caro
lina thus far.
“Yellow cuproeide spray
has given excellent results
in Ashe and other moun
tain counties. This material
has been scarce in wartime
but should be more plenti
ful next year. Yellow cupro-l
cide is equally effective,
when used properly.”
Some farmers applied the
dusts to their tomatoes
1 through a closely woven!
sack but this was unsatis-J
factory for disease control.
{GarrissY said that a rotary
type hand duster or a good
i puff type duster is essential
in doing a good job of ap
plying a uniform coating of
;du?t for disease control.
