Where sleepeth without dreaming One we loved but could not save. Three sad and lonely years Have passed singe our sorrow fell. The shock that we received that day We still remember well. In thoughts we see his smiling face 1" Just as we did the day we saw him last It is so sad to live without him In this lonely world below. Sad and sudden was the call Os one so dearly loved by all Your memory is as sweet today As in the hours you went away. But Heaven holds our treasure, God needed you, we know Your sunny smile and happy face Will brighten Heaven so. We often sit and think o-f you And think of how you died. And that you could not say Good bye before you closed your eyes. Day Exercis es in counties throughout the state during the fall , months. Mothers and fathers have attended these annual round-up meetings along with their children and they have been given a picture of the most out standing activities engaged in by the 4-H members. In Chowan county, ( for erample, the girls exhibit ed biscuit, cakes, pies, can ned foods, dresses, aprons, needle work, and other ar ticles, while the boys ex hibited corn, peanuts, to ; bacco, sweet potatoes, an( j chickens. At some achieve-’ merit day exercises dairy) and beef cattle, asd hogs; | have also been exhibited. ! Completed record books, 1 giving full information as to the methods used in carrying out the 4-H acti-J vities and the cost of pro-j duction, play a big part in! determining the winners of the various projects. L. R. Harrill, Club Lead er at State College, says that the record books sup plied by the Extension Ser vice fill a very definite need in conducting 4-H ac tivities and that those boys and girls who keep the re cords accurately and fully receive excellent training in farm accounting and! management. Special features are also a part of the Achievement Day exercises. In Chowan, for example, Richard Leigh of the Edenton Senior 4-H, Club won a prize for a de monstration in sharpening axe s and hoes, according to Virginia Bailey, assist ant home agent, who re ported the event. NEW TOBACCO RECORD SET Raleigh, The State Agri culture Department re ports that total production of tobacco in 1945 was 2,042,000,000 pounds, a new high record. This tota lcom pares with the 1944 crop of 1,956,000,000 pounds. The acreage planted to tobacco was larger in most states this year than la9t, while average yields- per acre were generally below last year. Blue mold was severe in many plant beds, and cold weather in the spring retarded pro-; gress. Dry weather follow- j ed and became acute in) Kentucky, but rains fell in time to bring about sub stantial recovery in most localities. The present es timated production —603,- .000,000 pounds exceeds last year’s record output by about 2 per cent and the 1934-43 average by 84 per cent. The increase in pro duction over last year was brought about entirely by increase in acreage. The average 1945 yield per acre for all Burley tobacco is 1,135 pounds per acre, com pared with 1,182 pounds per acre in 1944. Fanners are advised to start plans for chick rais ing in January.
