In view of this situation interesting experiments have been made to determine fertili zation practices for pastur es, especially with nitrogen, by the Agronomy Depart-! ment of State College. To get the most good gra zing possible from a pasture it must be treated as a crop. Plenty of lime, phosphate and potash should be ap pl’ed to provide a high level of fertility. What about nitrogen? D. S. Chamblee, R. L. Lovvorn, and W. M.j Woodhouse, agronojny spec ialists, answer this question by giving the results from numerous experiments whi ch they have conducted. Nitrogen applications are very effective in increasing early spring grazing and in the establishment of grasses in the sod, but in many cases grasses increa 'sed at the expense of the legumes in the mixture. Lespedeza was especially depressed by added nitro gen. The use of nitrogen as a rule is not very effective in increasing the total yield or protein content of grass legume sods. The main ef fect is on time of growth rather than amount of growth. HOME AGENTS NOTES Hardscrabble —The home demonstration club will meet with Mrs. Roy Mathis Friday, July 19 at 2:00. HYBRID CORNS SHOW NO BARREN STALKS One of the principal rea sons why hybrid corn pro duces larger yields than open pollinated corn is due to thei pbsence of barren stalks. Dr. R. P. Moore, seed im provement expert of the Agricultural Exp e r iment Station at State. College, suggests that farmers make; checks on their corn this ( summer where they are growing both hybrid and open pollinated corn. The hybrid should pro duce an ear on every stalk, with many stalks producing more than one ear. Stand is very important and . the number of plants per acre is often the deciding factor in large yields per acre, I where the crop is given full fertilization. Barren stalks I will be found in the open .pollinated corn, tively poor ones. I Just any hybrid corn is not a guarantee of good j yields. While one hybrid I may be well suited to one section of North Carolina, IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR MOTHER AND GRANDMOTH ER, MRS.
