Student government will be established in high scho ol this year. The students and teachers have already been discussing plans for it. With the agricultural 1 class added to the school program, the future farm ers of Yancey county should have brighter prospects District Health Department All schools in the three ‘ counties in our Health Dis- j trict will be open by Aug- 1 ust 26th. The health pro gram has already started in the Yancey county scho ols, and will be continued : throughout the school year. Health education is the pri mary purpose of the health program, and people are most receptive to education in childhood, and particu larly during school age. For this reason we spend a large amount of time and work in the schools. I In order to enter school in North Carolina, the State law requires that ev-j ery child shall be vaccinat ed against diphtheria and smallpox, and must be im | munized against whooping cough-, either by vaccina-| tion or by having had the disease. The actual work in the: schools includes the test for the first grade to, make sure that each child is I protected from the dread disease of diphtheria. A child with a positive reac tion is again £iven the diph theria toxoid.l Children in the grades and in high school are ex amined for a smallpox sear and if none is found they are given this vaccination. The health officer will make . a physical examina tion of all children in the first and third grades this year.
