The Good Health Asso ciation was organized 18 months ago at a meeting in Thomasville of more than) 1200 of the State’s leading medical men and laymen.; 1 Its purpose is to permanent ly promote good health. Its first objective, to this end, is the enlightenment of the people as to the need for more hospitals and health centers, more hospi tal insurance, more doctors and nurses, and more medi cal services in general i There will be no campaign to raise money, and citizens will not be asked to vote on an issue. The sole purpose of the organization will be to acquaint the masses with the shocking facts and to make them enthusiastic ! about good health. Statistics clearly reveal the need for a program of better health in North Car olina. More than a tfiird of the counties in the state have no hospital beds.' Nor th Carolina stands 42nd among the states r in the number of hospital beds per thousand population. Forty four states rank ahead of North Carolina in the num ber of physicians per thou sand population. In the death-rate of in fants, 38 states have a low er percentage than North Carolina. In 40 other states statistically speaking, a mother has a better chance of surviving childbirth than in North Carolina. And North Carolina led the na tion in the percentage of its young men rejected by the draft for physical deficien cies. North Carolina, in the opinion of medical experts can lick this health problem and take its place with oth er states that have over come similar problems- It will take a prodigious amo unt of work.
