With out federal aid, an added t burden would be placed.on 3 communities, SOCIAL SECURITY AND THE VETERAN “Who is eligible for pay ments of Old-Age and Sur vivors Insurance under the 1946 veterans’ amendment to the Social Security Act?” If the veteran’s military record was such that it qualifies his survivors for Old-Age Insurance pay ments and he leaves a wid ow with young children in her care, she will be eligible! to receive monthly benefits! I and each child under 18 ! may also receive monthly * l payments. As each child breaches the age of 18, his ■ benefits will stop. When all ■ of the children have reach -5 ed their 18th birthday, the t widow’s benefit will stop if ■ she is under 65 years of age. I But when she reaches the 1 age of 65, she'can again file claim for benefits, which [ will continue for the rest of her life. The widow, how ever, will lose all rights to * benefits, if she remarries. More about— ; Frequency Modulation l r* [ be about 100 times as strong [ as the static to come in £ clearly. But in FM recep £ tion this, ratio is reduced to £ two to one. £1 2. Fading—is wholly ab- X sent on FM because of its X short wave-length band. X Fading is a phenomenon of \ all AM or long wave-length X broadcasting in which a £ program comes in with tre £ mendous volume for a short J time and then decreases im l perceptibly inta small vol : ume. It is due to the inter- I action of two waves, one £ conducted along the gvowacl t tl*a thi’OUgh til© all*, £ which are sent out from £ the broadcasting station £ and intercepted by, the AM £ receiver. . t 1 Sometimes the sky wave £ reflected back to the earth ‘ reinforces the ground wave * causing great volume; at * other times it neutralizes ‘ the ground wave, causing £ it to fade. Since there is no *■ sky wave reflected back in £ FM reception, the FM list £ ner never suffers the tor £ ture of fading. X 3. Daytime - Nighttime * Coverage The effective X service area of an FM sta -5 tion is constant —it does J not vary from day to night. X In FM, the ground signal is j the only signal to reach the £ receiver; there is no sky £ wave propagation as there [ is in AM broadcasting (as j explained above); * 4. Selectivity—FM has : complete selectivity, thus : interference from any com ■ peting broadcasting station ■ is eliminated. If two FM * stations are on the same [ wave-length, the stronger £ wave is received and am £ plified and the weaker one £ is totally submerged. 5. High-Fidelity FM’s X three freedoms freedom X from static, freedom from X interference of other sta- X tions, and freedom from X distortion —have permitted X FM to use the entire spec- X trum of audible vibrations [ in the production of music. 1 FM, by using the short J wave, is enabled to take full X advantage of its ability to \ preserve all the overtones X which give musical instru £ ments their individual char £ acteristics and the speaking £ and singing voice the full \ range of their natural qual- X ities. Music lovers particu X larly appreciate FM’s fidel £ ity of voice reproduction £ with the absence of back- X ground noises. 1 i THE YANCEY RECORD , The North Carolina Div ision of Forestry & Parks during the past few years has contacted and worked, i with over 302 cooperators i on advice and help on their < timber holdings. -—e —: —— : NOTICE OF FINAL SALE In The Superior Court NORTH CAROLINA YANCEY COUNTY . , Yancey County vs. Zeb Blankenship and wife, Mrs. Zeb Blankenship Under and by virtue of a judg ment of the Superior Court in the above entitled action appointing j the undersigned as Commissioner ;to sell the hereinafter described j lands to satisfy said judgment for taxes for the years of 1943, to gether with interest, penalties and costs thereon, and subsequent tax- | es, the undersigned will, on the Ist day of April, 194?,' at 10:00 j i o’clock A.
