Anglin, Judge; and Molt Hensley, Judge. The books will be open for registration of new vot ers on Saturday, April 19th With USS Houston i± J~ T ~ James’- Silvers, seaman first class, USN, son of Mrs. Dora Shelton of Bee Log, N. C., isserving aboard the light cruiser USS Houston. The Houston was a mem ber of the task force that engaged in the largest At lantic Fleet maneuvers sin ce the end of the war. The maneuvers, which lasted for approximately 42 days included gunnery exercises simulated air strikes and surface action, and numer'- pus other drills and exerci ses. After part of the drills! were over the Houston pro ceeded to Guantanamo Bayj Cuba, and used the time 1 there as a rest and recrea- 1 tion period for the ship’s' erew. After several daysj the Houston completed her! exercises and returned to her home port in Newport. During the war the Hou ston was assigned to Task Force 58, and participated in numerous actions in the Pacific war area before being heavily damaged i* an engagement with the enemy off the island of Formosa. i hgfjghcdreyrtygh County Pre School Clinics j Are Scheduled Dr. B. B. McGuire, -Dis trict Health Officer, has announced the schedule of pre-school clinics for the Avery - Mitchell - Yancey Health District. The Health Department reminds all parents that their must be vac cinated against whooping cough, diphtheria and smallpox before they can enter school. Diphtheria and smallpox vaccine will be given at these clinics, if the parents desire it. ' The teachers in all scho ols have cooperated in get ting the names of children but are unable to get a com plete list. If any parents of children who will be six years old before the Ist of October should fail to get a letter, from the health de partment, please send your child on anyway. We will bo glad to have the parents come, but send the children on whether you can come or not. Please do not bring child ren under school age to be vaccinated as not much time is givemto each school, and furthermore, summer immunization clinics willt soon start and all children will be vaccinated at these! clinics, regardless of age. McLeod would be in Burnsville ev ■ ery Saturday, located in the county courthouse building, from 8:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon, to accept applicants for enlistments in the new Regular Army. Lt. Suydam further stat-. ed that it is now possible' for men meeting the enlist ment requirements to enlist for the following divisions jin the Pacific area. Ist Cavalry, mech. Div., 6th Infantry Division, 7th Inf. Div., 24th' Inf. Div., 25th Inf. Div., and the 11th air borne Division. Proffitt, 76, who died at her home on Burnsville Rt. 1, Wednesday morning fol lowing a long illness. The Rev. R. D. Ponder, the Rev. Eulas Adkins and the Rev. Elzie Ray will officiate and at the Easter Sunrise Service The annual Easter Sun rise Service will be held .at 6 o’clock Sunday morning at Mt. Mitchell Camp for Girls. Congressman Bulwinkle Leaves Hospital Congressman A. L. Bul winkle was back in his offi ce today after spending the past three weeks at the U, S. Naval Hospital where he had a thorough physical examination and has -been receiving treatment. Captain F. F. Kreuz, MC, USN, issued the following statement upon his release from the hospital today: “Congressman Bu 1 winkle. has been hospitalized at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Na tional Naval Medical Cen ter, for an arthritic condi tion’’. WHERE DOES OUR TIMBER GO?
