Among these individuals would necessarJj ily be Millard Honeycutt,! ( Burgin Mclntosh, John j Melvin Robertson, L, P. ( Horton, L. E. Briggs, Car- f ter Higgins, 0. It. KTMoore; Principal Public Sehool, J. J. Britt; Shoe maker, Gaither Parker. So far as my information goes, I find that all of the officers and business men mentioned above—with the exception of E. F. Watson! and J. E. Evans—have crosJ sed over the river to their eternal home. Fifty years ago the court house was located in the center of the public square j It was a two story brick| building with the court; room upstairs and the' rooms for the county offi-| cers on the lower floor, and on this floor a hallway led; through the building. It is said a. gentleman from the west end of the county was in the habit of riding his horse through the hall when he came to town. The oublic well was located a :’ew rods east of the court muse. It was equipped with .he old oaken bucket and a windlass to draw the water, rhe water carried a kind of i sourwood honey flavor, rhe well was discarded ;ome time later and filled ip with dirt to a level with ;he ground. Burnsville was not incor-j jorated and there was no dock law. Cattle, hogs amL )ther stock roamed at will >ver the precincts of the! ;own, and they all seemed ;o love the public square as larking ground. Indeed ;ome residents would come o the spuare with their nilk pails to juice their :ows. The Baptist church was i tvvo.story frame building; tnd occupied the ground at :he rear of • the present) court house. The upper story was used by the Ma sonic lodge. The Methodist church was also a frame structure and was located on the spot now occupied by their parsonage. As I have remarked be fore, money was scarce in those days and if a fellow was lucky enough to own a thousand dollars in cash, he was regarded as a wealthy man. The people almost as a whole relied upon the pro ducts of the farm and field to buy such groceries and other merchandise needed for their families. Corn, oats, dried fruit, beeswax tallow, feathers, ginsing and other marketable roots and herbs were handed to the store and bartered for the supplies needed. In turn the merchant would freight these commodities to Ashe ville or Johnson. City and exchange them for merch andise, Those were the days of cheap living. Home but. j chered beef fresh from the peddler’s wagon was 4VL*c a pound; a 25 lb. sack of flour Isold for 50c; a good fat hen for 20c; eggs 5c a dozen, and other things in propor tion. On my second trip to Burnsville around the turn of the century, I found it to be different town. Stanley McCormick school with Charles Hubbard as principal was going good, with over a hundred stud ents in attendance. And the Yancey Collegiate Institute ! with Ed Hawkins as prin-! leipal was running smoothly! j with perhaps a larger num. | ber of students. The town ; was crowded with boys and I girls from Yancey and acl | joining counties, seeking an education. These schools ran for a number of years and work ed a reformation amoung the young people of these mountain counties. Hund reds of young people were educated during the reign of these two schools, and many of their graduates are filling responsible and honorable positions throu- I ghout the country today. It was a sad day for Burns, ville when these junior col leges were forced to close their doors when the State established a system of high schools in North Carolina. It is stated on good au thority that according to per centage of population Yancey county has more college graduates than any other county in North Car olina. As usual I am stretching this thing out too long some more;, However l| would like to refer to the Burnsville Eagle again (leaving off the pumpkin .j and dried apples) and pay a short tribute to an old friend who passed away a number of years ago. The publishers of the Eagle will never forget the loyalty of Uncle Gilbert Wilson of Prices Creek, who stood by us in fair weather and foul. While he differed with us in political belief he was a life long subscriber and encour aged us all along the way. He j*£Yor-€&me—to—town without paying us a pop call, and his coming brought a ray of 'sunshine into the old print shop. As a final word at this time may I say that it is a source of consolation to Oscar Lewis and myself to know that during the forty years we presided over the destiny of the Burnsville * THE YANCEY RECORD NOTICE OF SALE OF LAND FOR TAXES NORTH CAROLINA YANCEY COUNTY Under and by virtue of an order of the Board of County Commiss ioners of Yancey County direct ing the undersigned Tax Collector of said county to sell all land for 1947 taxes: NOW, THEREFORE, pursuant to the order of the Board of Coun ty Commissioners the undersign ed will on the SEVENTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 1948, AT THE COURTHOUSE DOOR IN BUR FOR SALE: Special At traction for Parties want ing secluded place for home or country estate 102 acres 12 miles from Burnsville, N.
