UNION COUNTY FAR MER HAS HIGH CORN YIELD A 77 year old Union Cou nty farmer, J. R. Simpson, Waxhaw, Route 2, is now leading the North Carolina 1948 corn production con test in which an assortment of regional and State prizes will be given. Mr. Simpson took the lead with a yield of 9,981 pounds almost five tons —of com on one acre planted to Dixie 17 hybrid. On the basis of 56 pounds per bushel and a moisture content of 15.5 per cent, this is a yield of 136.21 bushels for the ope acre. Admis sion 15c and 25c. , ( ————— Micaville High School < The Micaville boys soft ball team has not been de feated in three years. There was one tie game with Bur nsville during that period. The team was made up of hard hitters who were also 1 good on the defense. Scores' for the season were: Micaville 14 Bee Log 0 Micaville 14 Bald Creek 1 Micaville 14 Burnsville 7 Micaville 18 Clearmont 4 Bruce Griffith, the teams star pitcher, hit a home runj in every game played. Tom-i my Robinson showed fine defensive ability in his first year as a regular. The Micaville girls soft ball team came forward with remarkable improve ment during the season.
