More about—
TOWN SQUARE
Square because of its ele
vation but mud made the
roads leading into town
and to the court house
doors practically impassable
during the winter months
and the rainy season dur
ing Dog Days.
The Square has heard
great oratory—when the
statue to Otway Burns was
dedicated with a Justice of
the Supreme Court as
speaker and on many other
occasions.
Political rallies, fare
wells to those who marched
away to four wars, and to
those who returned, ice
cream suppers when that
was the fad—many gather
ings, of many kind have
been held on the Square.
The original court house
and jail were torn down in
1907, and the present struc
tures built in 1908. The
Square then assumed its I
park-like atmosphere.
When paving the high
way through Burnsville
was proposed one plan sug
gested that it cut straight
through instead of going
around the Square. This
was vigorously opposed.
After all, Burnsville would
n’t be Burnsville without
the Square!
