A Partnership Entered ns second-class matter November 11th, 1936, nt the Pont Office, Burnsrille, North Carotins, under the act of March 5, 1879. AROUND THE DISTRICI By George Vitas U. S. Forest Ranger Mt. Mitchell District To most of us a new year begins on January first. But in government, busi ness is conducted on a “fis cal year” basis. A fiscal year runs from June 30 of one year to June 30 of the next. We are now in the process of bringing our books into balance for Fis cal year 1950 and preparing for Fiscal year 1951 Being the kind who would rather be out in the woods scaling logs and marking timber than sit ting in the office beating on a typewriter, we are most happy to have Miss Louise Huffman, a gradua te of Crossnore Business College here in the office to help us out with the deluge of paper work - that come 9 BURNSVILLE FEED STORE I j NEXT DOOR TO BANKS-YOUNG MOTOR CO. \ RECENTLY OPENED UNDER NEW (OWNERSHIP | : FULL LINE OF j|, j FLOUR, MEAL, HOG FEED, DAIRY FEED, AND CHICKEN FEED j I I STAPLE GROCERIES, TOBACCOS, CIGARETTES, AND COLD DRINKS FRESH VEGETABLES AND FRUITS RECEIVED DAILY -EGGS & FRYERS BOUGHT AT MARKET i PRICES j| YOUR BUSINESS WILL BE APPRECIATED | ji GEORGE ROBINSON, Owner j I Special! Miss Huffman, who hails from Hamrick, in Yancey County, is as pretty as she is efficient. If we were to pick the champion “Snake Hunter” from among our U. S. For est Service work crews, the honor would probably go to Forestry Aide, Albert Ballew of Hamrick. Albert already has four rattlers and one copperhead to his “ credit. His biggest snake had 13 rattles. Albert does n’t go looking for snakes, they simply get in his way. “You cant mark timber and listen to the buzz of a rattler too,” Albert says. There is an increasing demand for national forest timber in the Mt. Mitchell District. However, before we can sell a boundary of timber every tree that is to be cut must be carefully measured and marked with yellow paint. NOTICE On Sunday, June 25th. there will be a picnic on Mount. Mitchell for the members of Bald Creek Masonic Lodge and Bald Creek Chapter of the Or der of the Eastern Star and their families. Bring a pic nic lunch and plan to leave Burnsville at 10 a. m. En tertainment will be provid ed. 4-H Club News Yancey County 4-H Club members will attend camp on July 10-15 at 4he new 4-H club camp near Way nesville. All those who wish to go are asked to contact T. S. 1 Godwin, 4-H leader, as soon as possible. Trees are selected for cutting on the basis of whether or not they are ripe for cutting, and whe ther the remaining stand will benefit by their remov al. With an eye to the fut ure, the government fores ter strives to leave an am ple number of “seed” trees to reseed the areas which are cut. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeaeaeee !
