A Partnership 'Baton* as second-class matter November 11th, 1936, at the Part Office, Burnsville, North Carolina, under the act of March X 1879. People Suffer When Soil Is Abused The vital necessity for this country to protect ev ery care of good farm land against erosion and deple tion is underlined by condi tions in China, says W. M. Hensley, Chairman of the Yancey County Production and Marketing Adminis tration Committee. The average density of population in China on a cultivated land basis, he points out, is something over 1,500 persons per square mile compared with 200 in this country. Thig terrific pressure of humans denudes the soil of grass, trees and other veg etation, causing runoff, er osion, floods, famine and poverty. It is a vicious cir cle of “poor people make poor land—poor land makes poor people.” The need, for instance, of fuel is so urgent that most of the crop residues and manure are used for fuel and are therefore not returned to the soil. This means a constant loss of organic matter. Eighty percent of the people are farmers leaving only 20 percent for the fas hioning of finished prod ucts so essential to a high standard of living.
