N 0.2. BURNSVILLE, N. C., December 10, 1912. 50c per year GOOD ROADS By Prof. A. J. Hutchins Why should we delay any longer in building roads? Every law of economy and good business argues for the immediate construct ion of roads. But what are the arguments against road building? The same old ‘ question of taxing the fu ' ture generation. Let us consider briefly whether there is any real argument in favor of road ' building. In the first place, we are paying annually at least two and one-half per cent more for goods purch ased from merchants than we should have to pay if the roads were good. Nec essarily they must charge this heavy haul bill up to us. The following figures are based on the estimate of some of the best business men of the county. At the very lowest estimate our merchants sell $200,000 worth of goods each year. The extra charges, due to poor roads would be SSOOO annually at two and one half per cent. One leading merchant informed me, some time since that this ‘mud tax’ would be no less than five per cent. But I have taken the lowest esti mate given that I may be on safe ground. Above is a copy from a page of the Y. C. I. Student, a paper published by the students of Y. C. I. during the early days of the institution. Mr. Ed Hunter- of Day Book, a student of that time, loaned a copy of The Student to the Record for publication during “Home Coming” week for foYmer students of Y. C. I. Store \ 5 \ ’ ' The Powers of Thought It is truely said that “an idle brain is the devil’s wor kshop.” The thought pre cedes the deed. The act or iginates in the thought. ■ Therefore if we desire to be clean and true our thou ghts must be clean. Our mind is always busy with some thought. There are no vacant periods. Our thoughts, as someone has ■ expressed it, are as a river [ flowing all the time. If we harbor evil and unclean things in our mind the river • of thought, will become vile . and contaminated, but if ,we keep clean wholesome thoughts in our mind the ■ river of thought will be come as crystal. Habit of thought become part of our lives, either for good i or for evil. We cannot prevent evil , thoughts from coming into our minds but we can re . fuse to harbor them. Why i hot banish the evil and wel come the good? t * Chloe Wilson i Y. C. I. is still growing, ; six students having entered , during the past week. ; i Prof. A. J.
