AROUND THE DISTRICT
By George Vitas, U. S.
Forest Ranger
Out on the Florida Keys '
live the smallest species of 1
deer in North America.
They are called Key deer
ana are 26 to 29 inches in
and are 26 to 29 inches in
height. Once abundant, the
ir numbers have been re
duced to less than 50 and
they now face exterminat
ion.
And while southern Flor
ida wrestles with its prob
lem of too few deer, the
South Toe River section of
1 the Mt. Mitchell Game man
agement Area is beginning,
to exprience headaches that;
go along with having too
many deer. Every farmer
knows that his pasture can
support only a certain num-j
ber of stock. The same
common-sense principle ap-|
plies tothe deer population
on the Mt. Mitchell District.
Last Tuesday afternoon
we went up the South Tue
River road with Seaborn
Johnson of the Supervisor’s
Office in Asheville, to check
on some timber marking.
In a drive of less than a mi
le we counted 13 deer. Three
of the deer consisted of a
doe and two large fawns
with spots still visible. ForJ
some time now the deer
population has been build
ing up to where it is threat
ening to out-run the food
supply. To check this state- j
ment, all you have to do is
to get out into the woods in
winter and spring and note
the present height of the
deer browse line the
more scarce thefood supplyj
becomes, the higher the,

gathering.
deer are forced to reach for
mouthful. When the browse
line gets so high that the
deer can’t reach their food,
then they commence to go
hungry and get thin and
I weak. That’s when disease
'steps in and before you
know it your deer herd has
I been decimated by sickness
land starvation. We would
I not like to see this thing
i happen on the Mt. Mitchell
| Game Management Area.
The solution is to keep the
deer population in balance
with the food spuply by hun
ting enough each year to
harvest the surplus deer.
In some states even the
does are occasionally hunt
ed to maintain the balance.
We will grant that it is
thrilling to be able to drive
up the South Toe River
i road and see a lot of deer
I plunging into the woods but
we cannot forget how shock
ing it is to find their emac
iated carcasses in the woods
i when there are so many
idecr they cannot get en
ough to eat.lt’s much more
humane tolet the legal hun
ter harvest the surplus
i deer than it is to allow them
!to suffer the pangs of star
vation and eventual death
