THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1950 Byrd, F. B. President, Makes Statement <? The current ““ state-wide drive by the North Caro lina Farm Bureau is im portant to all of us, Zeke Byrd of Burnsville, Yancey County FB president, de clared this week because “sound organization is the farmer’s only means of ov ercoming the inequality be tween his production ef forts and his return on that production.” “American farmers re present 19 per cent of the 1 nation’s production,” he' pointed out, “yet, even tho ugh we are producing more food and fiber than ever before, our share of- the' national income last year was only eight per cent. Mr. ( Shaw has been fortunate this past year in being able to say he speaks for more than 76,000 Tar Heel farm families who are members of Farm Bureau. But he has also had to say that no one speaks for the other farmers unless they speak for themselves. “It means a lot to have our Farm Bureau leaders ' supported by so many farm ' families, but there is no | reason why they should not include among their sup porters many more mem bers in this state. We have a chance this year to push our membership beyond 80,000, our minimum quota, and I see no reason why we should not do just that.” Farm Bureau works for all farmers, the county leader said. It does not mat* ter whether you are a land owner, tenant, or share cropper, he added, if you are a member of Farm Bu reau you are represented equally on the national and state level by our Farm Bureau leaders. “Let’s not sit back and rest on the gains we have made as farmers,” he con cluded, “rather let’s get out and do a real job of getting members during this drivel &&I - I Bar ” /• vjßgf IHI sit 1 1 f I’ll ■lll jSbi l 8 !
