N.j Silver, Chairman of the; Yancey County Board,' stated that registrants and 1 interested persons could help the Draft Board and themselves if they will ob-j serve the three following suggestions: (1) Present in writing a statement of all facts which they believe will entitle the registrant to deferment. This should be presented at the time the 1 questionnaire is returned.' Any subsequent change in' status that might warrant j reclassification should be reported in w-iting. (2) File within ten days after the Notice of Classification is mailed, a request for per sonal appearance before | the Board, if desired. Os these, more than one third have paid off their loans, al though they were made for a period extended to forty years, and six out of ten of the remaining borrowers are ahead with their pay ments. Blackburn, 20-year-old Mountain Park, IS. C., boy, wins national 4-H Club forestry honors. For outstanding achievements in farm forestry, Sherley J. Blackburn won a S3OO scholarship plus an all-expense paid trip to Chicago. The scholarship was presented November 30 at the twenty-ninth National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. The North Carolina youth earned his award by putting sound forestry practices to work on his father’s farm. In addi tion to planting 5,000 shortleaf pine trees on a steep and eroded hillside, young Blackburn spot planted 500 white pines in the farm woodlot after improvement cutting. He also thinned two separate one-acre plots on ths farm wood lot and planted a half-acre wild life border of sereca and bi-color lespedeza. In all his farm for estry work, the Mountain Park 4-H winner strives for stand im provement by cutting scrubby trees for firewood and leaving straight, sound trees for more valuable timber crops. In the last seven years young i. ackburn has made a profit of $9,i25 from his 33 4-H Club projects including forestry, dairy, baby beef, tobacco, wiki-1 THURSDAY, MARCH 1, M\ life, garden, corn, pig, soybeans and pasture improvement. Blackburn hopes to use his scholarship to attend Appala chian Teachers’ College at Boone. N. C. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Blackburn of Mountain Park. This public service organization, representing the nation’s leading wood-dependent industries, en courages the Tree Farm System and Keep Green programs, both active in North Carolina. Purpose of the 4-H forestry award is to interest American youth in farm woodlands as a source of income and to encour age good forestry practices through tree farming.
