Mrs. Emma Lou Arries of Cleveland, Ohio is vis iting her mother, Mrs. J. A. Banks here. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown made a business trip to Charlotte last week. Mrs. W. B. Wray and Rush returned home last week from Florida. They were gone a month andj visited many interesting places in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Mc- Neil of Asheville have tak en an apartment at W. Z. Robestson’s. Mr. McNeil is with the State Highway Deartment, and will be in Burnsville for some time. Hope Bailey, who teach es in Wadesboro, spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. George Leslie accompanied them i home from Elberton. Quillin Phillips is in the Norburn hospital, Asheville where he underwent an op eration Saturday. His con dition is said to be good. W. A. Presnell of New- Male has begun construc tion on a new home 2 miles east of Burnsville. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ray Robertson of Johnson City, Tenn. visited Mr. Robert son’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Z. Robertson during the past week end Dr. Melvin Webb’s moth er is serously ill at her home in Mitchell county. Mrs. Charles Edwards, who has been in Williams Clinic for several weeks, has returned to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Glen Ray. Milton Young, a freshman in Berea Col-! lege, Berea, Ky., has been elected publicity chairman of the Methodist Student; Fellowship for the coming year. Installation services will be held on May 10 at the Berea Methodist church' j Milton is the son of Mr. 1 and Mrs. Drate Young, Burnsville, N. C. He was a member of the 1950 grad uating class of Bald Creek High School, Bald Creek, N. C., where he was a win ner of the county oratori cal contest in 1950. Sgt. Burgus Mitchell of the U. S. Army is expected to arrive at home some time this week due to the death of his father, Bras kie Mitchell. Sgt. Mitchell; has been fighting with our! forces in Korea for some' time. Mrs. Charles Trammel visited the Warren Had ley’s in Elberton, Ga., last week. E. S. Drake of Columbus, Ohio visited friends at the Nu-Wray Inn this week. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Price of Rockingham, N. C. are visiting Mrs. Price’s par ents, Dr. and Mrs. W. L. Bennett. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd El liott of Burnsville and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Jacobs, Jr., of Pontiac, Michigan were recent guests of Rev. and Mrs. W. C. Pipes of Lake Junaluska. Mr. Jacobs was called home because of the serious illness of his father, Floyd Jacobs of Franklin, a patient at Moore General Hospital. < Harvey Phoenix of Cane River is in an Asheville hospital, he underwent an operation there this week. Mrs. Joe Russell and children of Charlotte were the week end guests of Mrs. Ruessll’s parents, Mr. 1 and Mrs. Douglas Boone. I Mrs. Russell recently re- j ceived a 1 letter from her 1 husband, Russell who has been in Korea for several months. Capt. Rus sell is now in a' hospital in Japan. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Pow ell and children and Mrs. R. E. Powell of Mt. Holly, N. C. visited friends and relatives in Burnsville last week end. Fishing must have been good at Douglas Lake dur ing the past two week ends. Bob Angel and Jim Anglin reported a catch of 15 last week end, and Dr. Melvin Webb, Bruce Westall, How ard Johnson, C. 0. Ellis and Lon Roberts reported a catch of 35 the prefious week end. Elementary School Music Festival Held The second annual ele mentary school Music Fes tival was held in the Bur nsville Gymnasium last Friday evening. Each of the consolidated schools of the county pre sented a part of the pro gram. The theme of the festival was “Music ’round the World.’’ Directors for the pro gram were Mrs. Lilliai Robinson, Micaville; Mrs Doris P. Hunter and Mrs. Thelma Gornto, Clearmont; Miss Madge Carter, Bald Creek; Miss Tensie Bailey Bee Log, and Mrs. Madge Byrd, Burnsville. An excellent exhibit showing customs and dress of foreign countries, corre lating with the music, was on display. THE YANCEY RECORD ■ Edwards-Johnson X Wedding Announced Miss Hope Elizabeth [Edwards of Morganton and Bald Creek, daughter 'of. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Edwards of Bald Creek, was maiTied to Phillip Roberts Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson 'of Raeford, Saturday even 'iny in the Bald Creek Met hodist Church. The Rev. Manuel Hol land, pastor of the church, performed the double ring ceremony. The candlelight service was held before an ivy covered arch flanked with palms, evergreens and fern interspersed with white gladiolus and chrys anthemums and seven bra nched candelabra. A program of wedding music was presented by ‘Mrs. Mary Severs, pianist, land the Misses Linda Anne Neil and Sarah Ellen Prof fitt, vocalists. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Her gown of white marqui sette over taffeta was fash ioned with a deep yoke trimmed in Chantilly lacej and marquisette ruffles which covered the chapel' length train. The fingertip! veil of bridal illusion bord-l ered with lace cascaded from a lace cloche trimmed with seed pearls. She car ried a white Bible topped with a white orchid. Miss Ellen Edwards ot Winston-Salem and Bald Creek, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Charles Tomberlin of Bald Creek, cousin of the bride, and Miss Joan John son of Greensboro, sister of the bridegroom. Fred Johnson of Raleigh and Raeford served as his son’s best man. Ushers were Paul Johnson of Rae ford, brother of the bride groom, David Townsend Jr. ,of Rowland, Hal D. Burns [of Fairmont and Ralph j Neil Jr. of Marshall, cousin of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will reside in Raeford, Mrs. Johnson was graduated from Bald Creek High School and Western Caro lina Teachers College at Cullowhee. She now teach es in the Burke County School System. Radford of Burns ville and Mrs. Jessie Mcln tosh of Asheville, was mar ried to Charles Wiley Fos ter, son of Mr. and Mrs, Wiley Foster of Asheville, Saturday evening in Merri mon Ave. Baptist Church, Asheville. The Rev. G. Carlton Cox, pastor, performed the cere mony. Miss Edna Koontz, or ganist, presented the music The bride wore a white wool gabardine suit with blue and white accessories. Her only ornament was a string of Oriental pearls, and her flowers were a cor sage of purple orchids. The bride’s mother wore a blue suit with white ac cessories and a corsage of red rosebuds. The bride groom’s mother were a blue suit with navy and white accessories and a corsage of red rosebuds. Following the ceremony, the couple left for a short wedding trip. They will re side in Asheville upon their I return. Mrs. Foster is a gradu ate of Bald Creek High [School and Cecil’s Business i College. Mr. Foster is a graduate of Lee Edwards High School, Asheville, and The Citidel in Charleston, S. C. Lions Continue Scrap Metal Drive The Lions Club did so well in the initial collection of scrap metal in Burns ville that the current drive will be extended for two or three weeks, according to Dr. M. W. Webb, president. Collection of scrap is being made by the Lions to aid in securing glasses for children with defective vision in Yancey County whose parents gre unable to provide glasses.
