Thompson, St vena, 8.D.: I remember attendin a country school three miles frorr my farm home in Ireland. Most c the way there and return I was ca; rled “pick-a-back” by older bo: and girls. We used brown slivers i soft stone from a creek as penci to write on slates. From Mrs. Will Massey, Somerse* Ky.: My mother, after dryin apples, would knit about 150 pairs c wool socks and take them to th city. Father and mother wouli drive a wagon drawn by oxen. Thi load of apples and socks woulc bring them two or three hundrec dollars. They would bring home r. barrel of sugar, keg of coffee and enough other staples to last the ■ winter, and enough material to make the boys suits and girls clothes for the winter. That's tli: way we used to live back in good old Republican days. From Carl Rice, Big Cabin, Okla. 1 ’ I remember when Hidalgo, 111. was called Mudsuck. Aunt Kate Briggs ran the post office, Mr Heath ran the store, and Bill Lid: ran a taxi with his favorite horse ' When the . first telephone was in stalled, Uncle Sam Weaver saw th boys working on the line and toll them you couldn’t talk through tha wire because it wasn’t hollow. J From Amos Harris, Eufaula, Okla. . I remember when I saw my firs sawmill. It was pulled by a yoke c oxen which went around a gin po’ while the long heavy rip saw sawe up and down. Logs were hauled b. two-wheeled ox carts with wheel 1 seven feet high. One end of the lo: was swung under the axle and th > other end was let drag.
