' VIOLET RAYS ON OUR WAYS By H. M. Alley Note: this column i« written • with malioe toward none, but with the common good of all to mind. , •* » * Uncle^Josh says: “This last past Sunday was a powerful blus day down to Cedar Crick church. Though tha weather weren.t no colder than common, hit were just too bad fer most of the faithful few to attend aarvices. A big part of rever rant Samuel Goforth’s aermint were dedicated to them as had stayed at home by ther good warm fires, a-neglectjn ther duties. ’Cordin to the rever-rant Samuel a-body couldn’t stir these folk with a stick, they’s ao thick on the street* an in the stores on Satiday. He seem ed to think folk were a heap more inter-rested in .tending to ther own bizness, than a-seein after the Lord’s work. I figger the rever-rant will hafter etretch the offerin a heap fur der than usual this week. Be eaze them as don’t go to church, hardly ever remembers to send ther gifts. “Folks air alius a-sayin, ‘when I can’t be there in per son, I’m there in speerit.. Hit mought do a heap more good if they’una would send dollars ’stead o. speerits. 'Course they ain’t'nuthin wrong with a-body aendin his speerit to church, il reckon, —only I don’t know. of any storekeeper what takes •pewit# In payment" fer too rations and fuel. an slothes preachem aa to«r Auailio* b*f ■*«r bar:.' ** • • It came to our attention last week that the town government has ruled against further park ing of autos on or beside the •idewalks, on Green, Mountain Street, and that the policeman bad been placing “Violation Tickets” on a few cars that had ignored this ruling. Bravot In tended to safeguard human rives, especially those of school children, this ruling is a mighty good step in the right direction. (But there are more steps that need to be taken for the same purpose. For instance: Is it Announcement AFTTR CAREFUL CONSIDERATION WE HAVE DECIDED THAT BURNSVILLE AND COUN- . Nor is it the purpose of this column to . accuse it of any such intentions ; or inclinations. However, in be half of many who have noticed and deplored these conditions, we do respectfully request that the town policeman shall use all diligence to discover any and all such obstructions of the sidewalks within the town‘limits, and that he shall issue “Viola tion Tickets’, to all offenders. • • * •* * Down to Kingsport, Tennes see, one day last week they were saying that they had a ten inch snowfall against Burnsville’s six inch covering of white. We wanted to tell them that their white landscape didn’t compare in beauty with ours. But those Kingsportians seem to be occu pied with maintaining and ex panding their industrious little city, and too proud of what they have already accomplished, to consider any comparisons whatever. Se we just looked about and watched them hustle, and tried to envision what Bur nsville and Yancey County might accomplish along toe lines of industrial development, if all of aur citizens would fol-l low toe example of Kingsport and other manufacturing and trade centers, to invite and wel come new business and new in dustries to come our way. With everybody working and pulling together, not just for the pre sent, but for toe future growth and betterment of our section along these lines, marvelous changes could be wrought. l — Sed. < EYE CLINIC HELD The District Health Depart ment, assisted by the local Wel fare Department and Mrs. Elba S. A PEW days ago, I read to toe local paper a statement by a psychologist who believes that par ents are due a share of the re sponsibility for the nation’s ao cnled “Juvenile delinquency*’ problem. His theory: a lot of parants, overly concerned with the possi bilities of war, atomic destruction, unemployment, etc., pass on un necessary fears to their offspring. I think the man has a good point and agree that a lot of grown-ups who aren’t acting their age should get '‘hep.’’ If you still don’t dig me, I Infer that we aren’t giving the youth of this generation a fair rattle. Instead of passing off our worries to hot rod-mombo set, we should wise up to the deal that they have problems of their own. Granted there are quite obvious examples of the juvenile delin quency problem to any newspaper one might choose to read. But our news coverage facilities are much better than they were to the “old days’’ and maybe we are Just get ting a full report on thing* that have been happening for * long time. • I think it’s time we gave th* kids a break . . . particularly th* males. Today's teen-age boy has been growing up with the threat of military service hanging over, any plans for a career and Army aerv ice has replaced the dragons and “boogey-man” we used to hold as a threat against the younger set. Let a teen-ager make a mistake today, at home, in school, or on » job, and what happens? Some real ! .intelligent grown-up says, “Huh, bet you won’t act like that when i you get in the Army.” It’s not fair to the kids, nor th* j Army either for that matter. ) The world s largest known an ,.Uul- 'Jigger than the biggest of the extinct dinosaur's —is the blue whale, sometimes 100 feet long.
