If/you haven’t already done
so, it is time to sow tomato,
' pepper and eggplant seed in
hetbed.3, coldframes or flats in
the kitchen windows. Although
it is much easier to buy plants
for the garder, we like to grow
. our own tomato plants. Then we
know what we are getting. The
seed sowing date will depend on
how soon the weather will per
mit setting in the field. It usu
ally takes from five to eight
weeks to produce tomato plants
large enough to set, depending
on the temperature of the plant
bed. Pepper and eggplant are a
little slower in developing. By
figuring back from the last pro
bable frost date we can deter
mine when to sow the seed. By
sowing the seed thinly, it may
not be necessary to transplant,
but usually to
two inches apart about a week
after the plants come up will
give much, stronger and stockier
plants. There is no advantage in ■
growing plants to blooming size,
before setting in the field. The
young plants will 1 stand the
shock-of transplanting better
than the older ones.

| AUTHOR OF “HOW TO STOP WORRYING AND START LIVING" |
\/| RS. JOE BATIS, 882 Cedar Street, Abilene, Texas, says she often
heard as a child, “Look at those children, not a worry ip the
world.” But she remembers that even before she started to school,
she worried for fear something would happen to her mother. Her
father dyed when she was eighteen months old, so her mother was
her little world:
- After she started to school, she had other worries. ♦ __
She was afraid she wouldn’t pass in her school work.
During her sophomore year in high school, tjie doc
tor told her mother that she was going to have a f. ~'l
nervous breakdown if she did not get away from her to
school work for a while. So her mother took heron \|» jjj?
a two week vacation. This .helped, but after a few
weeks she fell into the same old rut of worry. She
graduated and thus ended that line of worry, didn’t
seem to help her condition, for when she went to
work |or the telephone company she' was worried for
fear she wouldn't do her work just right. She had CARNEGIE
two nervous breakdowns while working there. Why? Worry!
Then the one thing she had feared most, happened. Her mother
died. Her world was shattered, but she was made to realize that no
matter how much she grieved or worr.ied about her mother’s death,
it would not bring her back.
• Finally she ran across a book on worry which illustrated so many
situations similar to hers, and which showed her how futile it is to
worry, that she began thinking differently. Now, when she starts to
worry, she breathes a prayer to God to take her worries from her—
and He has never failed her. •

Valiant and Urbana. Earliana,
of course, is an old standby.
For themain crop Rutgers and
Marglobe are popular. Os the
hybrids, Burpee’s Big Boy has
done very well for us.
If the garden soil is infected
with fusarium wilt, it is advis
able to use only such varieties
as Homestead and Jefferson,
which are highly resistant to
fusarium wilt. These are not
early varieties but will survive
the wilt:
The best variety of pepper is
probably California Wonder. It
is a good grower and has heavy
meaty fruits.
Eggplant is not a common
vegetable in North Carolina
gardens but should be grown
more. The Florida Highbush
and Ft. Myers Market are good
varieties. As soon as eggplants
are set in the field the plants
should be covered with a DDT
■dust or spray to prevent flea
beetles and potato beetles from
destroying them.
Plantings of these crops can
be made at least two weeks ear
lier if the plants are, covered
with hotcaps or other plant
protectors.

A lot of folks whose business It T
is to be concerned about the fu
ture of our country seem to think
that in ,the near future we may
be lii danger of losing the position
of world superiority we now hold
in science, atomic industry, mili
tary weapons, engineering, etc.
There’s general complaint that
we aren’t coming up with enough
young people who are interested
I in pursuing science, research and
the like as a career.
I’m sure that these people know
what they are talking about. At
least, they know an awful sight
more about it than I do. Yet, I
hope they don’t (as some have
suggested) attempt to revamp our
high school system (make it more
specialized) in order to push young
people * into careers they don’t
choose for themselves.
Maybe o the .school system needs
working over in some ways", but R
would be sheer folly to do away
with most of the courses in Eng
lish, history and such in order to
make room for studies on nuclear
whatnot. Specialized colleges and
universities—where students in a
particular held are hardly on
speaking terms with their contem
poraries following another course
of study—are bad enough.
But, let’s don’t get it down to
the high school level. Can’t you
see it? Two teen-agers sitting at a
soda fountain—in walks another. #
“There’s Joe Jones, let’s ask
him to join us,” says one. ! ~
exclaims the other?
“And listen to all the drivel that
hydrogen hep-cat puts out? Let’s
go on with bur discussion of neo
plasticism.” _ ,
