Several Yancey farmers are using contour strip cropping systems of. and re seeding their steep land this spring, to pr* v ent excessive run off of rain with erosion losses. Personnel of the Yancey County Soil Conservation District have recently assisted the following farmers with the laying out of contour strips: Mrs. T. A. Mc- Kinney and Carl McKinney of Horton Hill community; Paul Bailey of Bee Log; Calvin Rob inson of Green Mountain, and James B. Stamey of Jacks Creek. At least one sod strip will re main between each cultivate! strip to slow down the run off of rains and to catch any soil that may move from the culti vated strips. Since the strips are laid out on the contour, all tillage operations are on a level line, making it easier on both the farmer and his workstock in cultivating ttnd harvesting his. crops. ’’ . Tile and open ditch drainage are two important soil and wat er conservation practices that many farmers are carrying out this spring. Personnel of the Yancey Soil Conservation Dis trict assisted 16 farmers during the months of March and April in surveying wet areas on their farms for tile and open ditch drains. Approximately 10,000 feet of tile drainage and 3000 feet of open ditches were laid out on these farms. By draining the wet areas on their farms, these farmers are able to move more of their row crops to fields that have the least erosion hazard and are normally more productive than their other land. The steeper land under cultivation can then he seeded to permanent hay or pasture mixtures, thus greatly reducing the erosion hazard on that land. .. FOR . ..
